Rock&Roll Surveys, the best influential Groups or Singers??

Read these all the time.
Just to see how my favorite band or singer stacks up? Been Rockin'&Rollin' for over 50 years. Read 2 today "Best American Bands" and "Best Female Rock Singers"

The 2nd was very disappointing! Not a mention of Carol King, Joni Michael and the best ever as far as I'm concerned Janis Joplin. She gave it all! What a performer. Sang with here heart and such emotion, sad she died at a young age. Is she on some sort of Black List? Need input!

Please before any comments watch these Please.

She had the Blues belter down...

She died 6 weeks after returning to her home town of Port Arthur, Texas...Seems that all of her fortune and acclaim gained her her nothin with her home town folks...she was just still Janice the loser to them. That broke her heart...cause she couldn't find no love nor sympathy from them.

^^^^ I recall seeing a very good documentary on her some years back...a very sad tale imo. She sure had some issues....but she had "it" too.

I didn't see those particular videos yet, but I've seen similar.
I don't understand why Buddy Holly was supposed to be so influential and Buddy Guy is almost ignored.

Edit:
Please 'splain it to me, at least the Buddy Holly part.

I saw that too...

Sure it is fun to talk about the best this or that but in the end it is just a matter of taste... and how far you want to dig back into history... every great artist was influenced by someone THEY listened to growing up.

But Janis was great, I have all her stuff on vynel somewhere in my record collection...

The second Buddy wasn't ignored by the r&r guitar slingers...not by a long shot imo, nor by blues hounds...

Don't tell me it was the color of his skin, because Chubby Checker and Little Richard were kingpins of early rock. Is there something else? too much talent?

I agree musicians appreciated Buddy Guy, but he seems to be ignored on these surveys.
Anyhow, I'm more interested in understanding why, in the surveys, Buddy Holly is so venerated.

I don't pay attention to them...no clue. It just might be 'cause he plays "the blues".... which can freakin' ROCK. Buddy G, Freddie King, et al....if you asked me about them back in college....WHO ?

Mebbe it was the glasses...who knows ?

I have studied the history of rock 'n roll as a hobby. Buddy Holley wrote his songs, many artists did not. His guitar work included a lot of innovation that others copied. And his singing was obviously different than Elvis' or other contemporaries. IOW, he was a leader, not a follower. He had a lot of talent, could play many instruments and was very aggressive about his career.

There were plenty of sappy artists at the time including Rick Nelson and Pat Boone. It took something to stand out and be successful at that.

Buddy Guy was/is stuck in the blues genre. Nothing wrong with that, but blues was not what kids were buying by the millions of copies in the late 50's.

I don't know if BG goes back that far, but by the late 60's he was a "wild man" on guitar....a la Jimi (but I'm not comparing them)....Jimi crossed over to r&r...the rest is history

"The blues had a baby, and they called it rock 'n roll" - MW

My exposure to the blues was via the Stones, Allman Bros, Clapton, etc. and the "real deal" blues they evolved from came later in life for me.

Have y'all seen the Festival Express dvd? It's great imo....good stuff with Janice and Buddy...and Uncle Jerry too !

Here’s an early version of Might As Well, JerrY’s song about that train ride.

Never had such a good time, in my life before.......I want to take that ride again...

I never got Janis. My father was a Blues and Jazz aficionado (as I have written here before, the weakest link in his stereo system was the human ear) so I listened to them all before Janis.

Like Buddy Holly, perhaps she is the venerable link between cultures.

My sisters both worshiped Janis so I have seen and heard it all.

Just wasn't/isn't my thing.

This works:

I have, I think a few Big Bill Broonzy in my Dad's storage locker.

Never seen that before and didn't know....thanks! Yep....in music, there are no "bests" after a certain level is attained, just personal musical preferences imo. I was actually "bored" during a Buddy Guy set about a dozen years ago....he was just doing his "showman side" and it didn't "move" me. Plus...he followed John Hiatt & the Goners....Sonny Landreth was the guitar "monster" that particular evening

Same song a year later.
Kicked up many notches.
Jerry clearly enjoyed singing this song.

I grew up in the 50's and 60's. I have my own issues with those who are in the Rock/Roll hall of fame. Some, IMO, are not deserving. Music changed with the advent of MTV. Medicare groups achieved success not because of their music but their videos. all I remember was "did you see the video" Some achieved legendary success posthumously. I like Janis Joplin - certainly a member of the 27 club - her legacy consist of a small portfolio. I remember with Big Brother and the Holding Company. Pearl is an outstanding album - but a game changer, I'm not so sure.

Amy Winehouse is another artist I just don't get. I'm probably going to piss a few people off, but other than the notoriety of being a member of the 27 club - she does nothing for me.

And there is Buddy Guy - I don't care what is popular and that is no measure of great music, he is awesome. But there are many Chicago Blues legends. Coco Taylor comes to mind. Then I'm from Chicago and I love the blues.
While I'm on a rant, I hate Paul McCarthy and Wings - nothing creative after the Beatles broke up.

Have any of you heard Joe Bonamassa?

^^^^ just reread the thread title...I agree about Janice. I liked her a lot, but "influential" (upon others)...mebbe not. And it's Koko ....caught her in a club in her prime....her "Blues Machine" was epic. Had her headline our local blues festival several years later....not the same. I did see this 13 year old kid channeling SRV about 3 decades ago....Lightening Joe Bonomosomething . He's an awesome player... just doesn't "move" me though. Another 11 year old kid opened for him back then....Derek Trucks. Caught the Tedeschi Trucks band just a few months ago...one of the best shows I've seen in MANY years...up until I saw the Jerry Douglas BAND a few weeks ago....unbelievable talent on that stage. I do like this thread !
