Very common.

I started here on the 944 board, the big joke (because is is almost every newbies first post) is "can I turbo my 944?".

Of course you can, with enough $$, but why when for a little more you can buy a 951 and Porsche has done all the engineering for you. And a 951 can hit around 300HP with a few bolt on's. In the end it will cost you more to turbo an N/A and it still won't be as nice as a 951.

Can I turbo my Versa?

You guys realize that turbocharging street cars is like 40+ year old technology, right? It’s not like this is some new fangled unproven thing. If you have a turbocharged car worry about everything else, because the turbos last a long time unless you are a moron and don’t change your oil.

Btw some of the previous posts are correct, this is almost entirely legislation driven. In many cases turbocharged engines actually burn more gas in the real world because people are driving more aggressively than the EPA tests. Boost = burn more gas. But from a government standpoint this allows the manufacturers to offer good power in a package that still yields good MPG, at least in EPA testing.

Now they have the e-boost thing working with the hybrids, high tech power adder. Mom got this Lexus SUV thing. It will go like a scalded cat if you put the boot to it, fuel economy suffers. Light foot and it runs off an electric motor at low speeds, let off the gas or brake and it charges. Delivers remarkable fuel economy.

I would get better gas mileage if I drove differently, the turbo just makes the difference more profound

My 2001 GMC turbo diesel pickup just turned 168,000 miles she runs like a champ . I change the oil/filter every 5,000 miles and at 160,000 switched to synthetic . It is amazing how quickly a 7000 lb. vehicle can accelerate with that turbo engine . It's a 4x4 dually and gets 20 mpg at 60 on the highway .

I had a 91 911 turbo that was completely bada$$ but back in 89 I bought a brand new Dodge Turbo Shadow and that car was amazing back then!

WHen I had my MSM and had a 23-25 mile commute, I could change my driving (as an experiment) and increase my fuel economy by almost 50%, and that was with me not being able to stay out of the boost completely. I'm sure I could have managed 50% if I had more will-power. I think I

Turbos? They sound cool and shoot nice flames. That's all I know.

Is this thread somehow resurrected from 1985? :D Turbos have been around in cars for like 35 years. and 70 years on airplanes.

Almost all my cars had (gasoline) turbo and I never had one fail. Had SAAB 9000 Turbo from -85 (the one without watercooling). Junked it @ 300k when it started rusting. Turbo was fine. Had SAAB 900 Turbo (watercooled this time). Drove it on E85 @ 270hp, Sold it at 400kmiles and engine got transplanted into another car. Original turbo! (head gaskets and transmissions, another story). My old 930? Turbo was never a problem...Had Audi UrS4 that I sold at 250kmiles with 303hp chip, original K24 turbo. Zero turbo issues (plenty of other ones). Seems to be still alive...

Turbos are good. More power from fewer cylinders, less friction, higher efficiency. Modern F1 engines are nosing on 50% efficiency which is unheard of other than slow moving large ship diesels.

I come from 930 so the game there is to create boost as 2-2500 rpm with all the old tricks so my boost comes on at 2500rpm now. It is fun? Sure, but there's still a tiny bit of lag.

I did however got to drive a 2017 C4S up to Newcomb's yesterday for lunch after our bike ride. Lucky me, I got to compared that and his 991 GT3. Let me tell you, I have not always been a big fan of newer Porsches, until I got my Cayman S, DFI flat 6, none turbo. This C4S has a gas pedal is connected to my eyeballs through Bluetooth. The handling is the best I have driven through the fast turns all the way up Angeles Crest. I did not feel any turbo lag, none at all. The powwer transfer is so linear through the power band. I couldn't feel the turbos. The GT2? Holy siht, rode rough through the streets, but the feel of the steering is Blue tooth to my brain x100. Razor sharp. Feels a little less powerful compared to the C4S. Just a tiny little that I noticed.

So, to answer your question, I think modern turbos are, all right.
