80’s V12 Jaguar and all those hoses

What are they all there for? Love the styling. Front engine, luxurious, 12 cylinders, 80’s at its best! No manual - bah! It’s what lies beneath the bonnet that frightens me.

Does anyone know what it is all there for? EPA mandated... blah.

Vacuum leaks. They're there for vacuum leaks.

That is a bit unfair, some of them are for the air conditioner.

Mostly emissions, aka HP reduction.

I always liked these when I was a kid. I thought they looked pretty good and the sex appeal of a V-12 Jag was pretty good even if I now know it really isn't all that.

I have a colleague at work that "restored" one a few years ago. He went on and on and on about how he sourced parts that were NLA to get it back to perfect condition. He eventually had lots of issues with the way it ran. I think he got that fixed and ended up selling it. He swore up and down that it was going to be worth $75k or something like that once it was restored. I suspect he sold it for 10-20% of that.

I now know that even if the car itself is in any way still kind of cool, you'd probably be far better off swapping in a Chevy LSx motor.

I have a love hate relationship with these. I have a friend who has a few. I make him beg for me to work on them. And feed me.

Ohhh the pure sex of that design! Has anyone here ever dropped a manual into one of the v12s?

The V12 came with the TH400 transmission, the 4.0 6 cylinder used the ZF 4 speed automatic. I have a 1994 XJS Convertible 2+2 with the 4.0 engine. For the most part, it has been a pretty reliable and trouble free car. Since I bought it about 5 years ago, I have replaced the convertible top, rebuilt the brakes and replaced all the belts and hoses. The only real "issue" that it has had was a failing crankshaft sensor. Sometimes it would start, other time not. Once I replaced the sensor all has been well with it! Oh, yes, it is British Racing Green with a tan leather interior and a black top.

Not even. Those hoses are EPA mandated to contain all the Lucas smoke.

My 1994 XJS uses Bosch electrics! Seems like Lucas, the god of darkness was banished at some time along the way!

My father in law owned one years ago. One day I was taking his daughter for a ride in it. Before departing he said to me “if it catches fire, just let it burn”.

That car sounded awesome on start up.

Harry's has to be one of the coolest dudes on the planet. The kinda guy you are happy to see have lots of money since he doesn't act like a tool over it.

and that car is beautiful.

I commend Jaguar for a good effort in the '80s on these XJS cars, but they were seriously overshadowed by their European bredren from Germany
