Hunters - Quality / Mobile Knife Sharpeners?
I follow the knife threads very closely and have purchased a nice sharpener set for home, based on comments here (Bob Kramer by Zwilling stones).
Last week was a very productive hunting trip (2 elk and a mule buck) and it became very apparent we needed a better sharpener. What are you all using / taking with you? Thanks! |

Thanks for the Bob Kramer link - I just spent 2 hours yesterday on 5 knives.
I keep one of these in a kitchen drawer to use on my wife's knifes. https://www.google.com/shopping/product/6349480843453749702?lsf=seller:7924,store:63992724 29064487237&prds=oid:10673354001585445977&q=pocket+knife+sharpener&hl=en&ei=6ErsW-vCDce4ggeN157gBA&lsft=gclid:CjwKCAiArK_fBRABEiwA0gOOcyP3n9yGyXYTMnv 3PYzJgrsZh30LSWIgdC4lYugBwProLTqB04dk4hoC-GkQAvD_BwE Bill K

I carry a lock blade Swiss army knife. I hike deep into the wilderness, so I have to bone out animals and carry only the meat. I come in with a sharp knife and a couple times during dressing and boning out the critter, I hit this sharpener. It really does a nice job for how cheap and light it is. I lost it on my last (successful) bear hunt and just ordered a replacement! G |

I have a couple of these: https://lansky.com/ https://lansky.com/index.php/products/dlx-5-stone-system/
Good enough to sharpen a Buck 119 so you can shave with it.

I have been using a Lansky set on my hunting / fishing knives for decades. If you just use that set on a knife "touch-ups" are very fast. The first time you sharpen with the Lansky you need to use the coarse stones to establish the edge. That can take a while especially with hard steels. Therefore, the Lansky knives I only sharpen with the lansky.
At home I use either a work sharp or paper wheels. Work sharp is fast, paper wheels make a better edge. Best edge is still free hand on stones, but that is pretty slow. I have a few knives that I still free hand. Bottom line - most people are very impressed with the Lansky edge and touchups are very fast after the initial edge. I pack mine along for hunting and fishing.

I have the Lansky kit too, and taking that to camp is a great idea. Not sure I’d want to carry it up into the mountains with me.
