Sons Scion XB sucked water...

Hello All

My son, who is at FSU, drove his Scion through a deep puddle and it looks like it sucked water into the engine. He has a cold air intake on it that hangs down low.
He took it to a local repair place and they claim the motor is toast, but it cranks over and doesn't make any bad sounds. I have asked them if they have done a compression test and they have not. They claim they don't need too. My question is; how can they possibly make any kind of a diagnosis without doing a compression check? And also can anyone recommend a good trustworthy garage in Tallahassee?

My thinking is the MAF is gone and should be replaced along with an oil change. Any ideas?

Thanks Pelicans!!!

mg

Get that oil out of there to ensure that the bearings don't lose lubricity. Have a scanner put on the OBD, and test it for codes. It sounds more like electronics got wet than the motor was filled with water. It wasn't fully submerged, so the common procedures for reviving a swamped engine back to life safely, shouldn't be in play.

What year?

There was a recall on those motors.

Clean it up and he might get a rebuild gratis.

2005 XB may not be covered.

Was a warranty extension / enhancement.

Burned excessive amounts of oil.

My brother runs the shop for Lipton Toyota.

His take, water washed the cylinders down, no oil on the cylinder walls, no compression, motor won't fire.

Oil change, try to get some oil pumped in there to get compression back.

Thats when you will know if you have any additional damage like rods.

Thanks Monkey!
I have instructed the repair shop to do just this.
I will update when I hear the results!
It is so very frustrating when I am 650 miles away.....

Thanks!

So the repair shop has now replaced the MAF and changed the oil. Car starts up and is idling at 2400 RPM's

When I cleaned the MAF and throttle body on my truck (GM 5.3) it had similar high idle. I had to disconnect the battery for a few minutes and that fixed the issue. I think it's referred to a the "relearn" procedure. Not sure if this is the same for Scion engines.

Did they replace the Idle Air Control Valve as well?

Very common issue when people do "tune ups"

Over time the wire on the MAF accumulates crude and the computer calibrates accordingly.

Then one day someone will go to town and clean up years of crude and the car won't fire because the "clean up" the computer has the MAF mapped to it's dirty condition.

If this were in my shop, I would remove , and clean, and check the operation of the IAC motor. It is in the air stream, and if water went in the intake, it most likely went through the iac also. It may just be gummed up , and stuck.
If it's easy enough to r&r, id pull it , clean it and put it back on and see what happens. Obviously , look for any and all air leaks, check the booster, make sure it did not ingest water .
Good luck, keep us posted. Ive fixed a couple that ingested enough water to hydrolock, and there was no damage .
