I have won at everything I have tried, until now...maybe

Some history (and I hate it when people on here ask for medical advise as you know) but this is just some info. Back in January I fell and cut my forehead when I had the flu. About 6 weeks later I hit it in the garage working on one of my muzzle loaders and two weeks after that hit it again, same spot! Then it would not heal and got larger and swelled up and started to hurt like hell. The tests came back skin cancer so surgery removed it and all felt better for about a month then a bump came up in front of my right ear. It got bigger and started to hurt a lot so I made an apt. with an oncologist and she said...."looks like cancer spread down the nerves on your face"! Saw a radiation oncologist who said the radiation I got as 20+ years as a nuclear machinist in the Nuclear US Navy might be the cause but not sure? Sent me to a surgeon (again) who took a bunch of samples (really hurts) and they came back as cancer. So 2+ weeks ago I had a bunch of stuff removed and then sewed back up and they set me up for proton radiation therapy which starts next week. They make a "mask" Thursday morning and then every day, 10 minutes worth for 6 weeks or 8 or???? Might not win this time it is hard to say which brings me to the title.

Everything I have ever tried, I have won, sometimes many times starting with control line stunt planes where I was Delaware State Junior champ several times and was even sent to the AMA Nations free of charge. Road raced motor cycles and won with a HD XR750 a dozen times and built a custom HD Sportster that won the Seattle Truck and Motorcycle show 1st overall. Built guitars and actually played several songs on stage at what used to be called San Diego Street Scene with Big Momma Thornton's band! Raced bicycles and did triathlons, winning in Brisbane Australia, Diego Garcia (10K run), road and track races in San Diego and Mexico and even built kites at one time I had the largest Cody War kite in the world. Now since I can't race due to arthritis I build and compete with black powder muzzle loaders and have won medals for the past 6 years!

But now I am not so sure as this endeavor may end up being my last although I surely hope not so now as I look back I can take a lot of pride in all the things I have done and the people I have met and those I competed against at various times. So I guess the moral of all this is to do as much as possible and do your best as you can. I am still teaching evening computer classes as it gives me great pleasure to try and insure the students will make sure there is nothing called a "bug" in anything they work on!

BTDT, The trick is to be so mean and stubborn that it gives up and goes away.
You can do it.

Mental attitude has a lot to do with recovery so stay motivated and positive . Follow doctors orders and don't miss any treatments . Life is a roll of the dice good luck in the weeks ahead . We are here for you ......... from a cancer survivor .

Whether you believe you can, or you believe you can not, you are right.

Winners win. There is more to it than physical prowess, they won't, or maybe can't, give up. There are some that have a lot of quit in them. They get a participation trophy

WTF, there is a Diego Garcia 10k run, what is that, twice around the runway?

Saw this walking the dogs

Ditto!

Approach this like any other challenge to be overcome. Do all the right things and focus on what comes next. Like a great warrior we will keep moving forward and we will win until we can no longer fight.

Two of my brothers are in this battle as well.

No runway, we did from the Brit's office building around to the coconut plantation house twice and back. When I was there things were just starting to get built and the biggest thing was a US Navy tender/repair ship sitting at anchor. Not even a pier!

Apply the same attitude, then go out there and kick some ass. You got this!

dafischer 11-13-2018 05:37 PM

What a record of accomplishments! Sounds like you have great discipline, sheer will, and determination. Unfortunately it takes more than sheer will and determination to overcome cancer, it has a will of its own, so you’ll need luck too. Do everything you can to keep yourself strong and healthy and don’t feel like a failure if there are setbacks. Remember the old adage, “the harder I work the luckier I get.”

I have always enjoyed reading your posts as you've shared your expertise, advice, and accomplishments over the years John. Your fierce determination shines through in them.
Best to you as you face this head on...

Am thinking about you John. You sound like you have accomplished so much in your life. Keep at it and keep busy.

Zeke 11-14-2018 07:37 AM

Cancer treatment has never been better than it is now and we are gaining. The other side of the issue is to really get healthy, diet and exercise-wise.
