An Icon remembered
The performance specs of a new 1967 427 'Vette...I believe done by R&T. Anyway, looks like they did it back in the day.

Impressive.
I like the typo under "Controls" - "Whee! position - Fair" :D |
Here's a weird one...a sheet from a CAR & DRIVER test of the then new '08 Bullitt Mustang, which is now considered old, slow, and obsolete in the Mustang pecking order. Note the identical 1/4mile time...

One of the test is inductive of the era. Starting. The Vette received good marks for starting. On a brand new car. Anyone that has ever owned a carburetor car remembers the pain of starting it in different temperatures.

Fuel mileage: 9-13 mpg on premium fuel
Cruising range: 180 -260 miles So basically, $40 an hour for fuel. |
24 psi in belted tires.
|
What an impossibly gorgeous car it was and still is. The road test photos also show a perfect stance which is sometimes missing in current times because the weight of the big block compresses the front coil springs over time.

Test temperature 15 degrees. Nice and chilly. And it still got good marks for starting.

Thanks for the link. The 67 is my all time favorite Vette. Yellow coupe with a black stinger hood - that's the bomb.

My dad had a buddy that had a '67 427 3x2. My dad was into cars. He said that there was a place that you could get different "tunes" for drag racing, and the various "tunes" (stage 1, stage 2, etc...) would guaranty you the capability to get to different 1/4 mile times. In stock form with stock tires, these things were going to be slower than with different tires.
|
I've had the opportunity to drive and tune 2 original numbers matching '67 427's. I - 425 HP the other 435.....
They were brutal in every way. I'm sure there are modern cars with faster 1/4 mile times, but those cars felt like they rotated the earth when you let it hang out. Nothing compares in that time to the beautiful lines and massive horsepower |

Amazing that 1st gear in the '67 took you up to 65MPH. That is a lot of powerbands. |

It would be interesting to see that car, with modern tires, do another speed run through the gears. Little doubt that with the increased traction the time would drop. To break 80 in second is impressive. No doubt a rude, crude, ground pounding beast. Also no doubt they are silly money to buy now. A new Vette will likely outperform it by every measure and be a lot safer and more comfortable and lots cheaper. Who cares?

So, next time anybody asks how I like my now 10 years old Mustang Bullitt, I can shrug and then say it digs out like a '67 427 'Vette. Sigh, it may be no status....but I do get a LOT better fuel mileage.
