"Help me PPOT you are my only hope" hotels/restaurant around the L.A. Zoo
Long story short, Christmas is coming, we have no family to hang out with (not at is a bad thing).
L.A. zoo has a Christmas thing so I booked that... now we are thinking of taking three day off (22-25) to escape. I am native to Smell Lay and did some field service in that area but have no idea where to stay or hang out. Key is where to stay, Glendale? Where? For things to do in the are I'm going to check on the observatory, El Capitan, and all those cool old theaters in downtown, (I'm sure some will have holiday themed shows)and the Autry, and train town... But the big question is 'where to stay"?Thanks in advance.

When grandparents were alive (until 2002) I would go to LA for a 24 hour visit two or three times a year. Quite a thing, since I'm in Florida. Leave here at 6am, get there 11am, lunch at Jerry's, spend 5 or so hours with the grandparents, dinner at Lowreys Prime Rib or the Stinking Rose, breakfast by wandering farmers market (gotta love east coast body time for quiet mornings on west coast), a few more hours with grandparents, and then on a plane back home. Grandparents were in West Hollywood and we'd usually stay the night at Le Parc since it was literally a 5 minute walk from their place.

What's you budget?
The London in West Hollywood is cool and centrally located, especially for the old historic music clubs and Theatres. It has a rooftop bar with a 360 view of LA. You want real history, try the Chateaux Marmont in Hollywood proper. It's where John Belushi died and Howard Hughes kept a permanent room for sleeping with starlets...including Marilyn Monroe and Jean Harlow.

I wonder why Shaun T6 and the Tabs haven't suggested a particular location

If you are seriously staying near the LA zoo and Griffith Park/Equestrian Center/etc., I'd suggest Burbank. You want to be near where you're going to be hanging out in LA.
My sister and niece are coming out for the Rose Bowl if Notre Dame is in it, (nephew goes to ND and they are all big ND football fans). I want them to stay at the BH Hotel for my convenience hanging out but staying in Pasadena makes the only sense.

My information is all ten years out of date.
The Dresden on Vermont. The Formosa Cafe. Musso and Franks The Yamashiro Canters deli These are all classic Hollywood places to eat. Just over the hill from the zoo. My only other advice is that there’s a yellow line painted on the ground outside the hippo pen. It’s there for a reason.

I am still a Hilton Diamond for 2019 - I hope to change that

I live about 10 min from there, Scott. There are a ton of Air B B near Hollywood that are super nice similar to the one suggested. If you can find a Air B B up north of Los Feliz blvd near the Greek theater, that would be my choice because its much less congested. There are a ton of trails there and a hike to Mt Hollywood is just a 2 min drive to the trail head. Mt Hollywood is the peak above the observatory, the highest mt top in the city of LA. You can see Santa Monica bay and the a portion of the valley from there. I have not been up there for years, (used to run high school x country up there) but I do know the trail is pretty darn near perfect that you can do it in flip flops now. Glendale, Burbank and Studio City is all just about 10-15 min to Hollywood or Griffith Park, without traffic. Add another 15-20 during rush hour but I really don't see rush hour traffic during those days.
There are some cool places to eat on Hillhurst or Vermont between Sunset Los Feliz blvd. |
