As you can see this metal garage door is substantially damaged. According to neighbors at midnight a crash was heard. Apparently a vehicle rammed the garage door and all that was stolen was a can of gas. Door damage about $800 cdn.

Last week we were taking the grand daughter for a baby carriage ride in her neighborhood which is actually a very nice area. We were on the opposite side of the street and two eighty pound dogs come from an open front door and charge towards us.
I start running towards the dogs and scream at the closest dog. The owner comes out after about thirty seconds and calls the dogs back. The owner apologizes and I said that is not good enough. I report it to animal control. Unbelievable.

I suggest you carry pepper spray or one of those air horns when out for a walk, maybe a good stout walking stick

Thanks Tobra for the suggestions. I do carry pepper spray but wife says not to use it near the baby. Well that I understand. Yes a good stout walking stick is an excellent idea. At age 72 I have no trouble with balance but it is a deterrent.

My wife was attacked and bitten by a neighbors GSD's. Was not really the neighbors fault. Gardners had neglected to close the gate to the yard when they left. Owner came home and not thinking to check, cause really who would, let the dogs out back where they promptly ran through the open gate and found my wife out for a walk.

My mother had the best way to handle neighbors who let their dogs run loose.

We had a 225 lb male English Mastiff.

If my mother had an encounter with a loose dog she'd go knock on the door, introduce herself and our dog and politely inform the neighbor that if their dog came after ours she would drop his lead so he would be able to defend himself.

They'd take one look at him and you'd never see their dogs out again.

Our double garage door is wooden and I would think that it is stronger than a metal one.
Looking at the opening at the bottom I would think the perp was scrawny to crawl under

Woke up to this one morning. We were lucky the door panel didn't hit the 911 and the trailer didn't hit the winter beater. The panel actually wrapped itself around the bumper of the truck. When I went to bed the trailer was 85' over and down the driveway parked where it was supposed to be and the garage door had all the panels attached and the windows had all their parts and the metal on the soffit was on the house and not 50' up in the maple tree.

Not owners fault? You own a vicious dog anything that dog does is on you.

I must admit to some level of culpability in this regard. The postman had me signing for a package at the front door the other day, and my vicious 93 pound dog bolted between us, out the front door, and charged the neighbor kids up the street. It got pretty ugly. The poor kids were screaming and running in all directions. Their parents came out just as one stumbled and fell in their front lawn, and my dog pounced and went straight for his head. I knew it was going to get bad...

So, darn it, Ed stole the kid's stocking hat and wouldn't give it back. I had to get all authoritarian and give him the "here", "heel", "sit", and "drop" commands. By then we were surrounded by excited kids and parents. The littlest one pleaded "can't Ed please stay out and play?". The dad said "I'll run him back and put him in the yard when the kids come in".

Jeff, you have the best breed of dog there, they will play with all humans with a smile on their face while doing it. My golden would take all the kids boots and stuff when they were out ice skating and drop them on the deck. It was her way of saying play with me, as she didn't like slipping on the ice.

Our yellow lab brings us shoes all the time to play with. Mostly she is just a big playful nut. Our previous lab was also, but don't you dare do anything threatening towards the kids. If you did she would let you know in no uncertain terms that you shouldn't do that.

Our current one would only be disappointed you weren't playing with her.

The thing is when a dog runs at you you don't exactly know if the dog is friendly or not.
Kicking the dog or hitting it with a stick could harm a dog but if the dog is loose that is the risk a dog owner takes. A preemptive strike on a dog as it runs at you? I am not sure how that would hold up in court?

I have been bitten several times but usually don't get a chance at a preemptive strike.
I think in the US the one bitten would get more sympathy in court but in Canada who knows.

Total dog lover here but in my early 20’s I once had an unleashed staffordshire type dog fly across his lawn and hurl himself at me as I walked up to ring a doorbell. At no time was his intention unclear. When it left the ground at me my front kick landed so squarely under it’s chin that the dog spun in the air, cried out in the high pitch dogs can do, and immediately retreated very clumsily back into his outside doghouse across the lawn. I felt terrible; I probably broke his jaw- I can’t see how I didn’t- and I got the hell out of there without ever making it to the doorbell and/or acknowledging to the owner what I had done (even if it was in self defense). Not one of my prouder recollections actually. In my 50 years I can’t think of another dog before or since that I didn’t like, or that didn’t like me. But that one was different.

I only paid $550 US for my double roll up.


But that was in the mid 90's ;)
