Are adopted Greyhounds dogs for the house?
Hi,
I'm really wanting a dog (I work from home so I could use some company) and a good excuse to go out for walks to clear my head. My daughter and I have read that retired (from racing) greyhounds are available for adoption. I really like them.. I have been reading they're quiet and smart-ish.. I would like to hear some opinions on adopting a greyhound and how they adapt to living in a house with two almost teenagers kids and no other pets. Thank you

My aunt had one. It was actually a pretty good house dog but they do like to run. From what I recall it was a pretty laid back dog otherwise.

x2!! greyhounds are super relaxed.
i think they call them the "fastest couch potatoes". i think FL just outlawed dog racing? if so, they are gonna flood them to the shelters i imagine. my friend has two.in a small home. in the winter, the dogs wear sweaters because they do a poor job of keeping warm on their own. something about the lean mass. her dogs are the most relaxed animals ever. i dont think they even bark at the door bell.

We got our Australian Red Heeler from a Greyhound Rescue group 14 years ago...package deal: A friend of mine got the Greyhound, I got the Heeler.
It worked out great for both of us. Greyhounds are very laid back, sleep a lot and are not, at least according to the rescue group and my buddy, hyper in any way. Keep them on a leash.

Second, as many have said here, very chill dogs, they do like to run so if you have the room bonus. We have an ex racing dog in our neighborhood, she is over 10 years old now, and she is the sweetest dog you will ever meet. Our 2 year old rescue potcake mutt gets all excited when she sees the Greyhound and the same goes for the Greyhound, she acts like a puppy when she gets with our rescue. Great dogs!! Fantastic companions. Again kudo's for thinking rescue first.

a friend had a female, and she was super chill and a real sweetheart. I don't think they have long life expectancy unfortunately.
If it sees a rabbit or squirrel to chase, you aint catching it though.

I have heard all the above about them. Supposed to be super laid back.
Question is, with all the dog racing going away, are there very many to be had? |

For those of you interested, Florida just banned dog racing, closing out by end of '20 IIRC. This means about 15000 racing dogs could be available... https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2018/11/08/greyhound-racing-ban-florida-means-thousands-dogs-will-need-new-homes/

Dog racing just got outlawed in another state. Expect a glut in the shelters over the next few months as the lowlife breeders dump the now worthless dogs.

(edit) Years ago, a greyhound came into my back yard. WTF? Clapped my hands, she walked right up to me. Couldn't believe the length of stride. Anyway, fashioned a leash, gave her water & a blanket to lay on in the garage, then called the number on the greyhound rescue tag she wore. Lady who answered was puzzled...dog should have been in California? Couple of hours later, I noticed a little pickup driving slowly up & down the road. Flagged it down, asked the lady driving if she was looking for something. So, a reunion... One of the most gentle dogs I ever had contact with...almost as if she knew I wouldn't harm her and wanted to help.

I heard they were supposed to be couch potatoes and had to be kept on a leash out doors because they'd run off. Some friends have two - one normal sized that used to be a racing dog and the other is a miniature one. They live in the country where it is hilly and the ground is uneven. My friend says the big greyhound has trouble running on uneven ground because it never ran on anything but a flat surface. According to him, it's still learning. Additionally the dog has put on some pounds since it stopped running and is a substantially large dog.

They can have issues with going up and down stairs. It’s not insurmountable, but they can sometimes need extra training.

I've known a couple of folks that had them and they were primarily inside dogs as far as I know. The one that I spent the most time around was like a sloth, super slow all of the time, but a love bug.
I don't think you'll have a problem with them unless you're walking one and an animal like a cat, rabbit or squirrel takes off in front of you.

Tons and tons. I think they age out of racing at a pretty young age, then they are rescued or, I would assume, put down.

This is Lilly. Lilly used to be a race winner. Well..one race. The first one. The second race she spotted her trainer out the corner of her eye an decided to exit the race and run over to near where he was to say hello. Her third race seen her charge out of the gate and grab a commanding lead. Half track she must've had an itchy back and just stopped and started rolling around in the dirt.
Lilly is a pet. Despite her speed, she's just not a racer. Of this we are glad because she is absolutely beautiful.

Be prepared to go the extra mile. The dogs are not trained to be a pet, they all will need significant work to become a companion, some more than others. In the end I think they all end up being great pets, just don't think it is an older dog and therefore obedience trained, potty trained and used to common life situations.

A Dog is such a good companion & a rescue is the way to go. Our neighbor had a retired track racing dog, she would walk him with his old number on, she told us he would get so excited when she brought his number out to put it on him.
