Hey, Pocket Knife Guys....

My son would like one for Christmas, which is kind of a big deal (long story). I know zero about them, although just a single blade. Don't mind spending a little $$, as this will be a "biggie" present, and I'm hoping it will turn into a hobby for him.

Many thanks!

You'll get what you pay for at $5 for a pocket knife. I'd make sure it had a lock blade just make sure he keeps all 10 fingers.

Personally, I really like Benchmade knives. They are American made (Oregun). They are very good quality knives with great customer service. I have several, and have been acquiring them over the past 15-20 years. You can probably find them to look at/touch at several places near you, but to get the best deal, you'll probably want to order over the 'Net. I like the Benchmade Axis lock for ease of use (one hand) and security (won't close on your fingers). Liner or frame locks also offer ease of use and are pretty secure (but not as secure as the Axis).

I particularly like the Osbourne 940. (OK, I like a bunch of the Benchmade knives and would probably spend too much money on them if I didn't watch myself) My last 2 everyday carry knives have been Osbourne 940s. The current is the carbon fiber version. The previous was a special edition with red handles with carbon inlay.

Figure around $200 or so....he's 20 and this is the first thing he's showed interest in that isn't computer related (like I said, long story). We are headed to the city to do some shopping today, and I'll hit the outdoor stores to check out Benchmades.

Thanks guys

Knife hobbies are awful. It will annoy the hell out of your future daughter in law. Jus sayin.

Benchmade = axis lock. That small sliding button on the Osborne 940 above. Pretty bad ass. You pull it back, the hinge loosens and you flip the blade out with a wrist flick.

Zero Tolerance/ some Kershaws (sister companies?) = Speedlock. I think it’s called Speedlock. Essentially a “fin” that you pull back with your finger. Quick pulll, and your blade deploys with the worlds most satisfying “click”. I just got my first one. The have two “power Trains”. Spring assist, or a roller bearing one that doesn’t need a spring. NCIS “Gibbs” put them on the map.

spyderco = thumb hole. You pull the blade out with your thumb. The sharpest out of the box knifevEVER that I have ever seen, with my coworkers new Para-2.

There are even higher end folders out there. The ones above, $200-300. Watch out for counterfeits soyderco on Amazon.

Not enough time to discuss the myriad od steel choices.

I am going the more traditional route and suggesting a Case. They are made in Bradford PA by the same folks who make Zippos. Nice knives, which can be customized from the factory. Check their website for options.

I carry a SOG Flash II. It's around $40, you can shave with it and it's indestructible.

My wife yells at me from time to time because I have about 10 pocket knives. She wants to know why one cannot suffice.

She would say the same about watches, she has now purchased 2 for me.

This thread is bad news for me. I am watching intently.

Someone sent me one of those in the gift exchange a while back. One of my favorite knives to carry just because it’s so small and light.

If this is gonna be a knife he carries all the time (I don't, but have one)...stick with a $50 Kershaw or something. That way...when he "brain farts" and has to surrender it to TSA eventually...

Ask her how many shoes she has..... That always works for me. My wife has two closets full of boots and shoes... She never complains about how many motorcycles, cameras, bicycles....I have.

I like SOG knifes.

Ageee with the Benchmade being great knife. Spyderco also very good for the money!
My EDC is a Spyderco Endura. It is a bit of a larger blade than I prefer, my Benchmade Mini Griptillion is more to my liking. Spyderco more of a work knife.

They are not cheap but they finish and feel are incredible. A step up from sypderco, bechmade, and the like.
