A call from 866-978-7414

I got a call from that number, they left a voice mail. They tell me the MicroSoft Windows license key on my Mac (running OS 10.14.2) has expired and it is essential that I call them to get it renewed.
A couple of questions:

What is a license key?
How did they know I'm running the secret Windows version of 10.14.2 on my Mac?:D

Should I call them to see what line of BS they're going to give me?

If you have time to waste, call them and keep doing what they want wrong. Finally ask them if you have to turn on the modem or can you continue to save power.

masraum 12-21-2018 12:13 PM

hahahaha.
Scammers are so much fun, aren't they?

On a vaguely related note, years ago, I did support for some software that was made/sold by Cisco. I got a ticket that said, "is the software vulnerable to this particular Windows bug?"

I responded with something like, "Since this software is not windows, it won't directly be vulnerable, but if the OS is vulnerable, then the application could indirectly be impacted by the bug. What is the version of windows that's on the server?"

"It's running on Solaris #.#.#. Is that vulnerable?"

Yeah, scary that the person was the admin.

Call them and tell them you need to renew it quickly or all your crops will die on Farmville.

GH85Carrera 12-21-2018 12:32 PM

I have one of those "Microsoft" calls about my license expiring a couple of months back. I told him I was Running Windows 386 and that was way more advance than just 10. Windows 386 was 376 versions newer!

Gullible brother got a call from "Apple" saying is Apple ID was messed up.
He gave them his ID AND password, AND credit card to "Fix" his account.
Then they went on to say it was because his computer got hacked and had him let them onto his PC with logmein.
They said all his anti-virus software was conflicting with each other and talked him thru turning all the protection off on his PC even though they supposedly called from Apple.

Told him he gave his Apple ID, password, credit card, and complete access to his PC to scammers.
Said he needed to call Apple to reset his Apple ID account and tell them what happened.
Then take his computer to Geek Squad (what he usually does) tell them what happened and have them remove whatever got installed, or better wipe his computer and set up everything he has with new passwords.

Told me he would probably be okay. Yikes.

I generally use linux. Got a call last week and as soon as I heard , Microsoft, I hung up. No business has my cell number. Had I not been busy I may have effed with them for a while.:D:D

I had one threatening to send on some webcam of me doing stuff while watching porn.

which is BS since I don't have a webcam that can film me doing that stuff.

So told the scammer to feel free and send out the vids as much as he wants.
Since I got a big Schlong anyway and I don't mind the marketing.

I like to talk to them. I always tell them I'm naked right now and pleasuring myself. They always seem to hang up. I don't know why

I get a call every month or two, usually tell them I am butchering a cow on the farm and can’t talk right now.

tabs 12-21-2018 07:54 PM

I want you all to know I am pleasuring myself right now...

Well I feel like I'm getting more popular. I got my first call from Beijing this week. Don't know what it was about, so I may have missed out big time since I screen all my calls and let those I don't recognize go to the answering machine. Number was: (139)404-2985. Went online to see if I could find out where it came from & all I could get was the (supposed) location of the area code.

berettafan 12-21-2018 11:45 PM

Surely I’m not the only one who mentally read the ‘8’ and then filled the rest in with ‘675309’

your scammer already sent it on to me.
I think he's trying to extort money out of me , or he will send more.

I Think i'll pay

Give them my number. I enjoy dealing with telemarketers now. After a lifetime of swearing at them, and getting angry, I now have great fun on their dime.
I even call them back if they hang up.

I had a call the other day to my cell phone. It is my business number, so I have to answer the calls. The called just started speaking in some Asian language, I think Chinese, but it could have been any of a many languages. I figured that it was a wrong number, or most likely a telemarketer.

Don't get any on your keyboard.

wdfifteen 12-22-2018 11:50 AM

MrWD got a similar call this afternoon. To top it off, I got an overdraft notice from my bank. Somebody got a hold of my checking account number and they've been spending money all over the east coast. I'm not sure how they're doing it unless they're using bogus checks. It's up to $380 now, and it's Saturday, no way to lock down my account, not that I need to. This is the account I use for PayPal and I only keep a few hundred $$ in it. $144 of thw $380 is overdraft charges, which I am not going to pay.

The crooks are working overtime this Christmas!

Is that why my keys are sticky? And I thought it was from the ice cream on my fingers.

mepstein 02-03-2019 12:10 PM

You answer your phone?

If you use checks at the grocery store, or any place at all really, just remember this. Every single check ever has your checking account and routing account, name and signature right on the face of it. Most checks have an address, and if it doesn't they usually ask for ID and write that on the check, and your phone number. Everything a crook needs. It is easy to buy magnetic toner, and print your own blank checks. Check forgery is pretty simple. Your bank's security is the only protection.
