garden tractor hour meters

Is anyone else having bad luck with garden tractor hour meters not lasting ? I bought a John Deere 330 diesel GT a few years ago with a dead OEM hour meter . I purchased a new one off Ebay and it is now dead after only logging about 50 hours I checked the wires with a volt meter nothing crazy going on just 12 volts . Ground wire is clean with no visual issues . Just chaulk this up to cheap Chinese crap ? Bad luck ? I really like to keep track of hours for oil/filter changes and general maintenance .

Look up hour meters online and prices vary from 8.00 to 100.00 but they all look very similar . So is it worth it to pay more ? Or is this simply they die when they die scenario ? Just trying to get ready for spring .

My 1987 John Deere 855 has been stuck on 450 hours for 25 years now. I service it regularly.

Was the new meter off EBay a genuine JD part? There are a few major players in aftermarket parts ( non OEM) that have a online presence.

No it was not . Maybe I should just go to the local dealer and see what they have in stock .

Haha nice try I love this little tractor , 16 hp three cylinder Yanmar diesel with hydro transmission . Last year I added a 2nd spool of hydraulics to run a mini FEL it works great . I just wish it had power steering . With a bucket full of dirt or stone it is somewhat of a handful to steer at low speed .

Crap tractor parts especially for older / vintage stuff is just a prevalent as crap aftermarket car parts. Regardless of the manufacturer, their stuff is well made, designed to last. So real OEM parts can be pricey. Me, I just accept that if I can still buy replacement parts from the John Deere dealer for my '91 430 - the price is secondary.

If you have patience, you can find NOS parts online sometimes at a bargain...

I'm thinking this one might be a good quality unit being a Japanese manufacturer .

https://www.ebay.com/itm/UNIVERSAL-2-HOURMETER-FROM-JOHN-DEERE-12-VOLT-QUALITY-NIPPON-MADE-IN-JAPAN/382296900992?epid=7010549875&hash=item5902abc580:g:u78AAOSwEaBaHXS-

I'm going to the local JD dealership this afternoon I'll see what they have and go from there .

I have a little Kubota tractor of what sounds like the same size (weighs 1K lbs.) from the early to mid '80s. The hour meter has never worked. The only thing I've been concerned with is changing the oil & filter every 50 hrs., so I'm not concerned with how many hours is on the tractor - probably over a million, but it runs great. I most likely err on the short side of the 50 hr. mark for the oil/filter changes.
