2000 LR Disco , tell me about the adventure I am about to embark on .

Not mine, Im smart enough. My biz partner just sent me a text with a photo of a pretty decent Land Rover disco sitting in my parking lot . He left me a list, of things to do, and told me to h with lots of upgrades, but.....
We are going to be Biff and Muffy today , and take it to run all our errands and give it a little shakedown
His end goal is a fun weekend toy, that he wants to run back and forth from Pittsburgh to the Outer Banks and drive on the beach .
I have always wanted one, but decided that the risk was simply not worth the reward for me .
On the upside, I guess I get to keep it for a month or so while I sort it out . I know threre are oil leaks, watts linkage needs replaced, and error lights on . Probably those 3 that are always on .

There are a number of Disco threads here on Pelican OT that you should investigate. We owned 3 versions, a '97 Disco 1 and a '99 Disco II, and finally a '03 Disco II. Each has their own quirks but all were a very satisfying drive.

Here is a write up I did for the Disco II series in a thread someone else started.

Discovery Anyone?

Also for the 3 Amigos (3 warning lights) that most Discos are plagued with I post this information

ABS Mod

EDIT - the link in that thread no longer works. Here is the correct link ABS Mod Detail

We sold our '03 about 18 months after that mod and never had issues with ABS again. Cheap and easy fix.

Good luck.

Actually, it's Biff and Buffy when addressing others.

It's "Lovey" when addressing each other, and you have to air-kiss.

Take an hour to get neatly scrubbed and don't forget to clip the nose hairs before you go out.

Oil leaks will be the oil pan, timing cover, and front main.. For starters. But before you drive it inspect and replace the front drive shaft. And of course the tres amigos has already been covered. Also look for oil leaks coming from the head gaskets, the OEM gaskets fail all of the time.

Also 2000 was a good year for the Disco, no oil pump pin issues, I drove mine to 190k and I still see it around.

I stopped trying to chase oil leaks on my 04, just keep it topped up.. Front prop shaft likes to explode when it's worn. Three amigos. Coil/spark plug wire replacement is friggin brutal. Coolant reservoirs fail pretty frequently, a lot of guys keep a spare in the vehicle. Not sure if '00 had it, but later had an electrical fault in the A/C system that requires a new ground to be run. Plastic everywhere on the cooling system.

One of those cars where the internet legend is slightly overplayed.
Like "all 911s will spin if you lift" (not in a straight line they won't! ;-)
We've had 3 discos and LR3s and ZERO issues with any. All are great at what they do but sure, they're no Hondas.

Just a tick over 2 years in, and he is giving up. he has spent more in repairs than the original purchase price, and has only gotten to drive it on the beach one time. It was always in the shop. It made it from my shop down the the outer banks, he used it for a month or so, and it spent the rest of its life at the only local shop in the OBX that would work on it .
It is now sitting in his driveway broken down again. He bought a Toyota .

Thank you for this thread. Every couple of years I get an itch to buy either a classic RR or an early Disco and reading this eliminates the urge. I ran a '95 RR for a few years and I do recall a lot of time spent replacing crap. I was younger then and it was OK but I'm now a few years into running a Taco and a 4Runner and I don't want to go back to that way of life.

I know you're asking about Range Rovers, but I thought I'd offer this up just for grins.

I'm just beginning a resurrection of a 1964 Land Rover 109.
You'll notice I didn't say restoration. I just want to get the damn thing running first, then see where it goes.

Finally got the LR 109 Home

Looks can be deceiving Maybe he bought a shiny version the PO neglected it's entire life...who knows. So if able can you share the problems had/have with it? The Discovery model has it's unique challenges (based on series) but I still see them gobbling 91 octane at 8 mile gulps even here in San Diego on a regular basis. They are no longer in vogue around here so the ones I see are lifted with mud tires and ARB bumpers.

I've owned a few varieties but an early 2000's Disco is a punishment I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Chit-Box doesn't do it justice, the ownership swaps and nonsense of that era created some real mutts (within a breed that already had issues).
