Taos ski area avalanche kills one.

Apparently they were skiing the chutes above Katrina Basin. Never skied the chutes but spent many a day skiing the basin. Great ski area. Sad news |

Very sad news and a reminder that even in bounds skiing carries risks and that the patrollers cannot blow every potential slide area with hand charges or howitzers. Not surprised that they were not wearing beacons as the area was in bounds.
One of my best pals ran the chunk of national forest that Taos and most of the other areas sit on. I got a lot of time at TSV in the 25 years that he was there and noticed numerous slides on the Kachina side of the area riding up Chair 4. Never hiked the ridge as I was too lazy and had paid for a lift ticket to do the work for me. Now I am just a cruiser and too old (and scared) to even ride up and ski down any of the chutes. Better to stick to the groomers and get more years. TSV is absolutely my favorite ski area on the planet and I hate seeing this kind of negative national publicity for them.
