Yeah, one more point. Make sure you keep the agreed value amount up to date. Car values tend to change, especially during a renovation.

For what’s its worth anyone in the repair business can attest that State Farm is THE worst insurer on the market currently. I read online and it’s pretty consistent from coast to coast that they are terrible. Their auto department is currently not profitable on top of needing to pay a $250 million class action lawsuit. I switched to Hagerty and they were slightly cheaper for agreed value that was higher than I could have argued they were worth with statefarm. Just had a small claim with hagerty. I emailed an estimate and 3 photos and I received a check. No hassles no haggles. Statefarm would have sent their resident ahole appraiser out to argue about what it would take to fix and would have only paid half of the estimate.

I agree... I just bought my 944 S2 Cab and insured it for an agreed value of $12,000. My total premium for 1 year is $222. They are insuring my other two cars as well as my house. I switched to them last year when my neighbors house burned down and I saw how well they treated him. When switching over to State Farm from Farm Bureau my total premium dropped 50%! I saved over $1200 a year, and no... I don't work for State Farm.

As I stated in another post, I have seen State Farm take care on my neighbor who's house burned to the ground. It was nothing short of mind boggling how well they took care of him. Total payment made on his house and contents, and brand new 32' camper GIVEN to him while they built the new house. Total payment of over $250,000 made.

With my Porsche, it is insured for an agreed value of $12,000 so If it the estimate is over that (probably will be for anything less than a small bump) they'll total it.

Hagerty here at $40K for about $550 per year.

Best pal had garage flood issues twice on his 86. First time Hagerty covered about $6K for repair. Second time, last June, the water was high enough to fill the glove box and they totaled it. Appraiser opened the driver's door, took a look at the water mark on the back of the seat and told him he would have a check for total loss in a week. They handled towing and all other details and he had a check for agreed value in a week. He built a new garage and no longer parks anything in the garage under the house.

Made me feel confident that I had made a good choice.

famoroso 01-13-2019 05:45 AM

Check out American Modern. I switched the them from Hagerty.

Good thread.

FWIW an insurance guy told me it’s zip code that matters not so much other factors with classic car insurance. Zero car thefts in my town, you could leave the keys in the car forever but I don’t. 20 miles down the road and it’s car jack/home invasions all the time. Sort of afraid to revisit my appraised value with Hagerty now that so many stoners are causing accidents here...

I use American modern and I don’t love the mileage restriction. Is Leland West any different?

Roswell 01-13-2019 07:07 AM

No Mileage restriction

Leland West does have the option for a quote with no mileage restriction.

Commercial/residential is an entirely different branch/arm, team, philosophy from auto. I’m guessing because of the amount of auto claims versus home claims it has forced them to be entirely different. It’s profit/loss driven demands. They don’t want to be aholes but they are losing money so they have to tighten up or raise premiums which is what likely needs to happen. I don’t think State Farm offers agreed value policies. I think you have a stated value/market value policy. Better double check. It can work in your favor because Porsche’s are always inflating so your premium might be based on $25k value because that’s what they show it’s worth but the market dictates it’s worth $35k then that’s what they will owe if you had a total loss or theft. The crumby part is that you literally have to threaten litigation or even possibly sue to get the money needed to properly fix your car OR you can go to a subpar shop and they will gladly pay those charges. I have literally stopped accepting State Farm claims in my shop as I can’t have my customers owing part of the bill, it’s just bad for business. In 20 years I only had to do this with one other insurer which was Geico and they quickly started to act right after a half a dozen customers went at them with pitchforks and torches. For the record statefarm was my absolute favorite large insurer as recent as two years ago.

nathanbs 01-13-2019 07:49 AM

Bottom line is there is absolutely no reason to not insure with a specialty insurer unless you do not qualify as in mileage, garage, etc. The last thing you want is in the event your Porsche gets damaged is to worry about it being paid for properly. It will be hard enough to find a proper shop but to them find out out your insurer won’t pay for their services is a nightmare. I think Hagerty just lightened up on the must be garaged aspect. I have a great instance agent that I got my Hagerty policies through if anyone is interested. He was referred to me by a fellow pelicanite and he is great

Just checked my coverage costs. Thru State Farm, I pay $11/month for each of my classic cars.
Granted..there is no collision coverage, but that's ok with me. I just wanted enough insurance to get them plated. State Farm was the best rate for me..checked about all of them.

Not a "chargeable" claim.

And, by the way, these is no mileage issue.

I'm w AAA SoCal as well, never had a claim but I trust they would have good customer service if I did. Being a AAA member, (best $100 a year I've ever spent), makes the whole deal easy. Registration/DMV/insurance/towing all in one place. I love AAA.

I checked out Haggarty once when I had a 911 that I drove very low miles but the restrictions were too onerous. I've read that they have eased up some but AAA works fine for me. Agreed value would be necessary on some car that is rare and hard to value but otherwise, I would go through the usual dance of showing comparable sales, arguing back and forth and bringing in the lawyer if necessary. Same old/same old. No agreed value necessary.

Tervuren 01-13-2019 11:30 AM

First of all, you can't use quotes for others to judge where the deal may lay best for you.

Secondly, there is a point where for whatever the frick reason I get a rate hike from hell. Compare, give the place I have a chance to match, then switch.

T bones me.
Clearly her fault.
She got the ticket.
Grundy paid the bill to fix my car EZ enough.
I sold the car instead as it just made me sick.
I went to ensure the next car I was going to buy, they said" NOPE."
Well sort of said no-
Per sequata insquta quote they said "I have to have enough collector vehicles to warrant one million dollar insurance".

So you are good to go unless you ever need them, and not even your fault.

To be fair this does not mean Grundy sucks.
They would suck if they refused to pay your claim.
Dropping you did not cost you anything, and they are entitled to that.

When you needed them, they paid.
You did not get shafted.

I have an umbrella policy and my ins co does not allow me to go to Hagerty's, et al for my only existing classic ('44 Jeep).

My sister also switched her collection to Grundy, this past year. One caught fire and we were able to get it put out..... Grundy was extremely helpful and easy to work with on the repairs. Payment was quick and easy.

Good to hear, I also, have Grundy $35,000 agreed value at $242/yr. My car isn't a daily driver and only drive 2500-3500/yr. Not sure if they asked for that information. They are owned by Philadelphia Insurance and offer deals if you have over $100,000 total value of cars insured with them. Hopefully, I'll never have to file a claim. Had State Farm and was paying $375/6months. State Farm had been ripping me off for years.

I use both Grundy and Haggerty, but overall Grundy is cheaper apples to apples on limits and coverage.

What he said.

I use ANPAC for my insurance. We have the house, and all three cars covered by them. I just received my renewal on policy so I have it handy.

I have my 1985 911 valued at $46,000 (maybe a little high)
Total policy for the year, $332.00

About 10 years ago while on a vacation trip to California I hit a deer. This was before smart phones were really on the market. My agent found me a glass company to put in a new Sigla windshield so I could drive it home. I found three quotes from top body shops, but I knew I wanted to use the local Porsche specialist. He fixed it right, new single stage paint, new fog lights, new parts except the hood. That was from a donor car, but painted inside and out to match. They paid the costs minus my $500 deductible.

Oh, and as a bonus, after three years of no claims they send me back a nice check. Last September I received a check for $1,116.25.

We had a hail storm a few years back that wiped out the roof. They replaced it and the cost for the damage to the storage building.

Oh and as a bonus, they cover the utility lines coming into the house. So if the water line from the meter to the house to the sewer has issues, they will cover it.
