A car I don't need: E63 wagon

This has to be the most badass wagon on the planet.

That is all.

Not in white, though. IMO, of course.

Those AMG wagons are tough to find in the US and usually go for premium $$$ especially when they are in good condition.

onewhippedpuppy 01-13-2019 03:18 PM

Yes please. In white.;)

madcorgi 01-13-2019 05:00 PM

They are proud of this one--$70K.

Fantastic rig. A natural progression for me:
Volvo 850 Turbo Wagon
Volvo V70R Wagon
E63 - makes sense no?

That car is +- $80K here. Can't really justify the cost.

jorian 01-13-2019 05:16 PM

Just looked and here is a local one:

2014 black/black $75K CDN and only 30K miles.

The MCT 9 speeds are the ones to have.

slow&rusty 01-13-2019 05:48 PM

I love everything about that car!

madcorgi 01-13-2019 05:52 PM

I do too. Occasionally I dream about using the drivetrain out of my E92 M3 to make a 3 Series wagon. I think people have done it, and it's certainly do-able. But I don't like the styling of the rear of the contemporary E9X wagon. And I'm lazy.

Doesn’t want = need?

From my experience driving AMG Mercedes cars, I think I'd get tired of driving an over-powered wagon pretty quickly. After a week of doing launches and filling it up w premium, it gets old.

YMMV.

I was looking at an older E55 AMG years ago and after driving it for ~ 20 miles came to the same conclusion. I don't surf so the entire wagon concept is lost on me as well.

Personally I found my C63 to be one of the most laugh out loud fun cars that I’ve owned, and a damn good “normal” car when you weren’t feeling like getting in trouble. Lots of journalists list the normally aspirated “63” (really a 6.2) V8 as one of the best internal combustion V8s ever made. The newer turbo 63 models aren’t nearly as charismatic though they are much faster. I’ve been keeping an eye on C63 prices, they get much cheaper and I might pick one up.

My former neighbour had a C63 sedan and the sound of it accelerating away cold up our steep hill was magic to this Petrolheads ears

High HP station wagon....reminds me of an early Cayenne commercial:

“Do you really need 500HP to buy diapers?

Ever run out of diapers?”

I have a 1999 C43 AMG. Gets my vote for best all around sedan. Last vehicle (W202) designed and specified to legendary Mercedes Benz “forever” build quality.
20 years old and trouble free. No shortage of technology, either.

That's not the point, if you need the power a gentle tap on the loud pedal gets you moving, you don't always have to drive it at 10/10ths

jwasbury 01-14-2019 05:36 AM

I cross shopped pre-owned E63/E55 AMG wagons vs. a new CTS-V wagon several years back. Ended up with the Caddy. Because manual transmission, and because hot rod 550hp Caddy wagon with 3 pedals is the automotive equivalent of a unicorn.

I don't know how spacious the recent crop of MB wagons are, but I will say that the CTS-V wagon was barely more useful for hauling around stuff than the 928S4 that it replaced in my garage. Hopefully the Benz is a better cargo hauler, and hopefully it has a larger fuel capacity than the CTS-V. Those 2 were my only gripes with the V-wagon.

It was a fun vehicle for a year or so.

I'll have to drive one sometime. I had a couple of friends who had them when new, they switched out of them fairly quickly and I remember one of them being really glad to see it go. Said that it was really powerful but a "ridiculous car." He has never said that about any 911 or other higher performance car.

That's interesting and congratulations. The C43 was a great looking and driving car but the ones I've seen at my friend's shop were as far from trouble-free as it gets. Major, catastrophic mechanical issues. Sad, because they are cheap and have the best seats I've ever seen in a sedan, IMO.

You would never drive it at 10/10ths. No one here has the skill to do that. As for tapping on the pedal, an E350 wagon moves smartly down the road and keeps up fine w better acceleration than a 3.2 Carrera. What's the point of a 600hp station wagon that needs $3k brake jobs and $1500 in tires every 12 months?

And before you tell me that I'm just a pischer and that it's for big ballers, I know people who could buy a new one every Friday and donate it to the food bank. They don't have one. Very few people want the car in the OP. It is cool, I'll give you that.

That was a very cool vehicle and I remember when you ordered it and picked it up. I also noticed that you were done w it after not very long and it probably cost you a pretty penny to own for that time. There is one on BAT right now w low miles.
