small gas grill what to buy ?

For home use I have a Bubba Keg charcoal grill and love it, however sometimes I just want to cook something quick and don't want to mess with charcoal. Also might want to use small grill as a RV grill also. Did a internet search and lots of grills out there. I like the looks/features of the various Weber Q series grills. So do you guys and gals have a dual purpose grill ? What do you use ? Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks

Get one with a metal shield in front of the tank and regulator!! See this thread...

Bad day today or "How I spent Memorial Day in the hospital"...

We love our vintage Charmglow grill, I just need to hook it up to natural gas instead of using propane tanks and fabricate a metal shield to protect us from fireballs, like when the regulator failed on Monday...

Weber Q220. Electronic start, large cooking area, tall-dome lid, thermometer. I also installed the automatic light. Great for RV-ing. Get the cart for it.

Went to Home Depot today and picked up a Weber Q 200 with the folding cart and the hose adapter for using on larger gas cylinders. Went together easy and I screwed a small bottle on it and she fired right up. Looks to be good quality. The 200 at HD must be different than other 200's as this came with the side shelves but no thermometer, that can be cured with a drill bit.

The 200 is different than the 220. The 220 has electronic ignition, a taller lid for cooking larger items, and a thermometer. Everything else is the same.

We have one of the bigger propane Webers, it is fantastic and worth every penny. Best burgers off of a propane grill that I've ever had.

Cooked the first meal on the ' Q " it was marinated chicken. I think I had the grill too hot when I first put the chicken on. But got the heat under control and it came out great. Working off the 20lb. cylinder with no problem.

Take a look at the TEC Cherokee FR infrared grill. I just picked one up for the same reason you are looking for a small gas grill - for a quick cook when I don't want to fire up the egg. TEC build quality is amazing.

I also just picked up the predecessor
model of the Cherokee that is 60%/40% IR/hot air vs 100% IR in the newer model. These are no longer produced and are desirable as they do provide some flame char vs 100% IR sear.

Electric version of the same grill also picked up recently on Craigslist. These portable IR grills are really amazing. TEC Build quality is great. These babies weigh in at 55lbs and solid stainless construction means they'll last for years (these were discontinued in 2006 and they still look new). Replacement parts are still available through TEC. The newer model (alum vs stainless) is lighter at 28 lbs.

TEC is $765

A lower cost version ($400 on Amazon) :
Solaire Anywhere Portable Infrared Propane Gas Grill
Built in USA, high quality heavy gauge Stainless.

I bought the Solaire for both backyard and camping.

FAST- in 5 minutes you're ready to grill,
BEST tasting steaks, chicken, seafood
NO CLEANUP- ash, grease, etc. -- it all vaporizes on the ceramic burner.

This has proven to be ideal for camping. No residue left to attract bears,
critters. No ashes, No greasy goo to clean. Works off 1lb propane cans
or larger propane bottles. Built to last.

I picked up one of these NXR 2 burner grills at Costco this summer. Works great if you're doing up shish kebabs, burgers, brats, etc. Can't beat it for $99 although I haven't seen any around the last few times I went there.

Yea, the TEC's are pricy but built like tanks. Best to find one used on ebay or craigslist. There is one for sale on ebay right now. The Solaire's are nice as well and not cheap either!

Home Depot carries something similar to this. I think under the NexGrill Label. Also $99.

Sometimes you Do get what you pay for.

Those cheapo Costco units are gas burners, NOT infrared, and flimsy.

Solaire BBQ is as hot as white hot coals from briquettes
and there is no flareup or fire from dripping fat.
Food cooks in about half the time as a conventional BBQ.

20 gauge stainless steel
14,000 BTUs of infrared power

Replaced ceramic burner plate and refreshed stainless clamp hardware on the TEC Cherokee Portable this weekend - looks pretty good for a 10+ year old grill.

Absolutely. I was going through a "cheap" $200 Walmart quality grill every two years or so. Either the some operational feature would break (no parts available) or the bottom would rust out. They also cooked like crap. I think I'm on year 5 of my Weber that lives outside with a cover, it still looks and works like new.
