really...you can't be serious about this..unbelievable
http://www.nypost.com/news/nationalnews/70543.htm
I mean, its like kids in the playground. "We ain't gonna talk to you anymore if you don't play with us." This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard, unless its just a fake. |
These kinds of things make one think that there really are idiots running some countries. Wonder who remembers that it was France that gave you the Statue of Liberty. Maybe it should be shipped back.
French fries...it has always been so. Same thing was after WW2, frankenfurter was named hotdog. So, any plans attacking France in near future? Freedom fries......FREEDOM FRIES? Wonder how many million they spent deciding the name. Could those be called any more moronic? Do I sense some sort of inferiority complex here? EDIT: McDonalds is an american company (yes, we do have McDonalds over here too). If they start changing the name of the fries to Vapausperunat (Freedom=Vapaus) I am going to boycott the whole firm...Well, like it was any use...anyway........ Its all over the net now, here's some more: http://www.collisiondetection.net/mt/archives/000257.html |
Please...

..." a statue, for freedom from hitler"...sounds like they got the better part of the deal. .."ahh, you Europeans just don't get it". Lots of quid, but NO pro quo...!!SmileWavy |
Its just ridiculous to start changing FOOD names....huoh...

a place around here changed the name to american fries...

It's just a symbolic gesture designed to show France that we are sick of their crap. Listen, France is our B1TCH. There would be no country called France if it wasn't for the USA. They have very short memories for the 50,000 Americans who died liberating a country that was too weak or disinterested to fight for themselves. I don't think that every country in the world needs to go along with everything we want. But France? If we say jump, France needs to say "how high" and they need to say it quickly. The amount of anger that Americans are feeling for France is pretty amazing and is not going to go away soon. The word is ingrates, and theirs is an entire country full of them.
There are certainly some morons in the world, that is true. Especially the ones who think that changing the name of fries is anything more than a way for our officials to symbolically give France the middle finger. I loved what the leaders of Portugal said the other day. They said they were going along with the United States because if they were ever attacked they knew they could count on the USA to protect them. They said we know we can't count on France for protection. How funny is that? Funny and absolutely true. You asked, "do I sense some sort of inferiority complex here?". Yes you do, you definately do and it is very, very strong coming from your general area and southwest of you. |
When did the USA take over Finland and occupy it?
|
I'ts good to know that our Congressmen are spending their time doing stupid things like this.
Don't they ahve more important things to do? |

*sigh*
we can't use the "if it weren't for us, you'd all be speaking german" defense forever, you know. THat was over fifty years ago, and things have changed a lot since then. changing the name "french fries" just because france opposes something that our government wants to do is one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard. I don't really care either way; I will continue to call them french fries no matter what the name is officially changed to... I know them as french fries, and if I referred to them as anything but french fries, it would be like doublethink... and we all know what happens when people begin to doublethink... |

I can't respond to every argument at once. But he CAN refer to France giving us the Statue of Liberty and I can't refer to WWII? I think we should stop using the WWII argument when it is no longer true, or if France ever acts truly grateful. When will that be CJ? They've had 60 years so far. |

The US involvement of getting the dictator Hiltler out of France (among other places) was more recent history. (read: people whom fought and were freed are still around) The French had a hard time giving us the Statue of Liberty (those guys are all dead now). At the time (it's said) the US really drug its feet in accepting the statue. It would be like the guy next-door decides you need a big planter-pot for your front porch. He's "an artise" so he makes you one . .. and every time he sees you he asks "when are you going to come over and get your gift?" Curt's right; the quid pro quo is wacked. |
"is the math really that hard?) "
Is reading really that hard? I wrote OVER fifty years ago. Since the war did not happen EXCLUSIVELY in 1943, I wrote OVER FIFTY because that is a better catchall statement. Sheesh, argue simantics, whydontcha? And I don't think we should show preferential treatment for the French because of their gift of the Statue of Liberty, either. I didn't say anything about that, you put words into my mouth. "I can't respond to his 117 year old gesture with a 60 year old sacrifice of 50,000 American lives?" First of all, we did not get into WWII because of the Germans' occupation of France, we got into it because of our own interests, to make sure that the American Way was not threatened in the long run. We cleared the Nazis out of France just because we happened to be clearing the Nazis out of EVERY COUNTRY WITH NAZI OCCUPATION. We did not sacrifice 50,000 American lives FOR FRANCE, we gave 50,000 American lives for America, and the good of the entire world. Does that mean that the French owe us a debt of gratitude that they still need to be paying off? I think not. Why should they go along with what the Bush administration is doing (although their motives aren't completely pure; I am merely playing Devil's Advocate here) just because of what happened in WWII? They have no obligation, as far as I'm concerned. |
I think we should change "French Toast" to "French is Toast"
Oh, BTW, 115,000 US soldiers died on French soil. If that makes any difference. |
The English and the US substantially provided for the rebuilding of France and Germany. Bombed out Volkwagen, for example was broght back by the English and the US, and turned back over to the Germans when it was on its feet.
No doubt, it is a new day. The French are free to pick Saddams side. |
CJ,
Congratulations. I see you did very well in Cynical Views of American History 101. Apparently, that's a requirement for all the college students in your part of the country. I do agree that my comment was petty about the 60 years vs. 50+ and for that I apologize. However, I put no words in your mouth concerning preferential treatment of the French for the Statue of Liberty. I was talking to someone else the 1st time and then the 2nd time, I was explaining to you why that argument was valid against someone else's post. So we both may need a little help in our READING comprehension, huh? I can't help yawning while discussing politics or history with a "liberal college student from Mass." That is about as interesting and original a profile as a drunk Irishman on St. Patricks Day. |

Yeah, since it took three days to decide on it. Someone probably just mentioned it while they were eating lunch and told it to another person and it got around. Its not like they spent the day thinking that they need to change the names of everything that has the word french on it. |
