My 67 had a stock 40 hp when I got it. Shortly before it was stolen I put in a 2180 with duel Webers. In baja bug form with the nose, roof, and tail cut off, I doubt it weight more than 1,700 lb. It was a ROCKET!

Been a long time since I have looked at a vintage bug but that seems like a very, very good price.
My brother had a 58 and it was great fun. |
Wife had a 66 when I met her. She used up 7 of my 9 lives in that car. Wish we still had it.
You really didn’t expect us to tell you not to do it right? |
I've posted this pic before. My '65 VW was one of (maybe the) my all time favorites. It was so favorite it got stolen. I loved getting in it in the mornings, opening the sun roof, and driving it to work - and everywhere else. Go for it.

Bugs are great fun. I bought a 1971 VW Bug this summer, drove it for 6 months, did some minor maintenance and then sold it in the beginning of December for almost what I paid for it. I originally only bought it as it had early 911 sport seats that I wanted for my 1972 911 but I really really liked the Bug.
I definitely would consider buying one to keep. The one I had was a good solid driver but the paint was horrific and it was poorly aesthetically modified. Still, it drove extremely well and I had a lovely seven hour trip home post-purchase and another two-three hour drive to deliver it to the new owners. They bought the car but didn't know how to drive a standard transmission? In a lot of ways the 1971 Beetle reminded me how it was when I first got my 911 as it was just a cheap cool car with bad paint. I didn't have to care about who I let drive it, where I parked it in the lot, the weather or road conditions when I drove it, etc. It was purely about the driving experience and the adventure. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1548281966.jpg |
The paint on the Beetle was much worse than shown in that particular photo. The paint was cracked, flaking, fading, different shades and bondo was showing through in numerous spots. Two paint shops refused to even give me a quote. The bug was super solid structurally. I did paint the exhaust black and change out the wheels for original wheels. I rewired and cleaned the engine bay plus all the regular maintenance (filters, fluids, plugs, etc.).

It's been known to happen .. Having a Maui VW repair shop in the early '70s, I'd run into the grateful hippie chick now & again ;^ )
Tell the wife you need a Bug for when the EMP hits .. |

My first car was a '70 Bug. Slow as a slug but boy it was fun to fishtail it around corners in the wet.

Do it, Patrick. We all "need" exactly one more car than we already have.
I'm still pining for my '70 that was rather unceremoniously taken from me by some fool in an F150, just about 15 months ago now. I had just started prettying it back up after retiring, after commuting in it for over 20 years. I had just installed a brand new 1776 with dual Kadrons, a pair of brand new and freshly painted front fenders, new bumpers front and rear, new fabric and stuffing in all of the seats, new carpet over a new floor pan, and on and on. The other guy's insurance gave me $10,000 to total it, so if you are looking at a clean Bug for $5k, you are doing well. |

My first car was a '68 Bug. Of course I paid $999 for it in '79

I never owned a Beetle but I did have a '65 (I think) VW Type III Squareback. Loved that thing except overnight I left an uncovered bucket of water next to it so it rusted out.
