Duckduckgo

That’s the name of a company. Yes THAT! WTF is wrong with people? There is a local company called Lion and Panda. Seriously.
What happen to strong, solid names like Acme, and Excelsior, Non Pareil, New Process, and Buffalo Springfield? The decline started with “Apple.”
What - are we all in kindergarten now? We all need LEGO names now?
End of rant.

Don't be disparaging towards Apple, please.

In this day, and age, you need something named unique to get noticed, and have people want to click on your website. Old standby strong names like SEARS, ansd PENNEYS havent worked for years.

Way too many millenials that have extremely short attention spans would rather click on something that harkens back to a childhood game, rather than something that sounds like grandpa's tool store.

Toxic masculinity we will have none of that. I have heard there is some internet company selling German car parts called Pelican or Peach? What happened to names like Panzer or Tiger?

You must hate the way English pubs are named.

Pub names
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pub_names
Quote:

Pub names are used to identify and differentiate pubs. Many pubs are centuries old, from a time when their customers were often illiterate, but could recognise pictorial signs. Pub names have a variety of origins, from objects used as simple identification marks to the coats of arms of kings or local aristocrats and landowners. Other names come from historic events, livery companies, and occupations or craftsmen's guilds.
Perhaps we are returning to an altered or hybrid version of illiteracy?

Some great stories below, maybe there is a story behind some of our current names too (the story of Pelican Parts naming).

Blame the internet age.

Any business needs a web presence and secure their tags as consistently as possible across the major social media platforms.

Since domain names and social tags are unique, no two entities can share the same, it’s mandatory to come up with names that are either not taken or are so unique that they won’t be confused with, are to similar to others.

And you have to be careful that where the syllable/word lines are in the name.

Pen Island

However, It wouldn't surprise me if the old men when Patrick was young complained about companies not simply proudly caring the name of their founders/principal members.

Sears & Roebuck
Hilton
Etc...

Trump keeps this older form of naming alive in that he puts his last name on everything. Oldschool class right there.

Duckdudkgo is a pretty good search engine that does not harvest and sell the details of your search. I use it. I do not care what they call it.

WD, relax, get back on your meds. The world is a different place. When there are a million businesses out there, you need something interesting and catchy to get attention and stick in folks' memory. Non Pareil, that's a type of Almond. Why is that a great name. New Process, also, just a moderate name in my opinion. Buffalo Springfield is another odd name, I've always thought. When I think ACME, I think Coyote and Road Runner, and then I think "what kind of odd generic name is that?"

Excelsior, that's not bad, but if the entire page in the thesaurus for Excelsior had been covered, then it would cease to mean anything.

Through 68 3/4 years of life on this planet I, sir, have earned the right to be a curmudgeon and I intend to inflict it on you young whippersnappers at will. I also talk to myself out loud and I've forgotten where the "off" position is on my turn signals.

The more we all use duckduckgo, the better it gets.

If privacy concerns with google is an issue with you, duckduckgo is the defacto standard.
Startpage.com is even more serious about privacy.

N.B. protonmail.com is a great alternative to gmail. gab.com is an alternative to twitter.

The market is speaking...
