been looking at AR's for a long time. I want one like I shot back in the military in the late 80's which was similar to the Vietnam style (A1 or A2). (you can tell my ignorance of them).
I was looking at building one since I could not find what I wanted. then I found this one for $550.
I don't like the hand guards or the detachable handle. the hand guards are easy enough and cheap. I am also going to replace the upper with one that is not removable. I found this upper

https://www.primaryarms.com/luth-ar-a1-c7-stripped-upper-receiver

I could not build it for that price.
yes I know I will need some tools to replace the upper.

also looking to replace the trigger.

oh, the wife already has a kimber 380 and she has been drooling over the matching 9mm. well she bought it. I am not overly impressed with the kimber, especially for the price. $950. only ONE mag came with it, same with the 380. also the 9mm came with a padded bag but the 380 didn't.
the 9mm had a few jams first time shooting it. last one the bullet was angled down with it stuck under the ramp (don't know what its called) that guides the bullet into the barrel. it also seemed to jam on the last round. not sure if she is not getting the rounds in the mag properly or what. also have had a few on the 380.

she is now looking at the kimber 1911 45. $$$

BTW, anyone interested in the ruger mark IV, grab a gun has them for $286. also just bought one of those to help her with her shooting. still all over the place.

also loaded up on ammo

1600 22's for $75
500 9mm for 80
420 5.56 for 120

I did not think those were bad prices.

I bought an Armalite M-15, which was an A2 style AR-15, 20" barrel and the carry handle part of the upper, not an attachment.

Not cheap. I think I paid around $1200. Very high quality. It it worth 50% more than my Colt? Or double a PSA build? No.

Make sure she is tapping the mags (so they seat to the back of the mag) after loading similar to how you would tap a pack of smokes before opening.

She may also be limp wristing when she shoots. That will cause a lot of guns to jam. She should be locking her wrist.

T77911S 01-28-2019 06:41 AM

^^
that's what I thought, about the wrist, until I shot it, but then she may have loaded it

most of the time I tap the mag but I will be more adamant about it. was not sure if that was an issue with handguns.

the AR was a PSA build.
I was thinking about a higher quality but for what I will do with it I don't need it.
I was even looking at the rock river NM AR, but the price and weight are not needed for me,

here is another upper.
I think I like the first one better but having a hard time finding sites for it.

hand gaurds

rock river 2 stage trigger.
is 2 stage something I should get or just a single stage

My local store has the old Nam-era AR reissues for sale. I think they're around $1200. They're a fad. I think the modern stuff is much better.

Chocaholic 01-28-2019 07:11 AM

Had same problems with a Kimber Micro9...sent it in for repair. Got it back and it was better but still occasionally jammed. Not good for a carry spoon. Traded it in for my Sig P320c which has been 100% perfect.

red-beard 01-28-2019 07:24 AM

What do you mean by Nam-era reissues. Are these actually semi-auto converted M-16 A2s?

No doubt that there are much better rifles made today for half the money.

T77911S 01-28-2019 07:26 AM

the wife likes it because it matches her 380.
if and when it jams again I will take a pic and send it back in

ok, getting confused in the uppers.
I think I want the old A1 style but I want the deflector but no forward assist but not a deal killer.
confused about the M4 ramps.
I did find this one.

this one is pricey

I did a rock river arms 20inch .223 wylde chrome lined barrel, and a better FCG then just the part mills offer in the lower kits. I also went with a flat top upper so I could mount an optic. Shoots very tight groups, but doesn't like steel case.

As for ar15? IMHO they offer over penetration for use for big game hunting. Shall I recommend the AK series... Still can get Russian vepr in 7.62x39. Very high quality firearm, and ballistics that will knock out big game.

berettafan 01-28-2019 07:45 AM

T77 perhaps you might get rid of those 1911 guns and grab her a couple Sigs! you can get stainless/alloy or stainless/stainless with beautiful rosewood grips stock. OR you could get some G10 grips for them in red, blue, grey or several other colors!

T77911S 01-28-2019 07:46 AM

don't hunt.
just wanted an AR A1/A2

Respect that. I shot a A2 in basic. Iron sights and 20in barrel.
I would stay away from the gov m16 parts kits. I know a lot of the arms rooms are going to the M4 now, and the m16's are beat to **** especially with the new m855a1's chewing the crap out of feed ramps...
anyways. I digress. You can get a reweld colt lower, and even a m4 marked colt lowers that aren't MG's. Very authentic look.
If you don't want the carry handle you can go with the m4 style flat top that you can mount an Eotech, or Acog. once again not something period correct, but acogs are current issue.

T77911S 01-28-2019 09:42 AM

I guess I need to look at mine again when I get home.

but again, the M4 feed ramps. are you talking about the ramp at the end of the barrel that feeds the round in. I will have to look at what that looks like.

Brownells might have just what you are looking for in their retro spoon line.

red-beard 01-28-2019 02:46 PM

I plan to do a 7.62x39 upper soon.

fred cook 01-29-2019 04:29 AM

A few years ago, I bought an inexpensive AR15 ($600) that was essentially an A2 that had a semi auto lower and trigger group. The rest of the gun was pure A2! The upper had all the proper proofs and marks and the fixed carry handle. It had the full length fixed stock and the A2 round forearm. It worked perfectly, something that I was concerned about when I bought it. I kept it for a few years and traded it off for something else. So, they are out there, you just have to look!
