Knife making.
 

Does anyone make knives as a hobby? I just started. I cut this one from a saw blade. If anyone has experience with this, any help or advice would be appreciated.

Seriously though, I think it would be a fun hobby.

I've seen some fantastic work done with files, lawn mower blades, and rail road spikes.

The key is the right kind of iron/steel

There is a local place named Anza knives that makes knives out of files/file steel they buy from Germany. I stopped by and looked at their merchandise. They had some pretty nice knives, although I've never seen one for sale any place except for a vendor show I went to years ago. They anneal (?) the knife blades to take out the brittleness.

I have a few Anza knives.

They make a fish filet knife from band saw steel that is phenomenal, easily rusted so you have to take care of it. I also have 2 knives made from high carbon files similar to a pic posted previously. All bought at a "Spoon" show years ago. I'll post some pics.

I wish I had the skill and the tools t omake knives, sadly, I do not.

anza is selling.
I like file knives but I am not a fan of their knife design. (blade and handle shape just not my thing)
They look sharp though.

I would like to find/build a forge, and do some shaping myself. I have access to 100s of #s of scrap steel, and some of the tools required.

I can't upload it here, but there is a .mp4 video of handle made from pinecone/resin which has a gorgeous pattern.

Having a forge would be cool... I have to google it to see how difficult they are to make.

I was bored one night in the garage and started rummaging through the scrap metal.

Blade made from an straightened leaf spring. From tip to hand guard the blade is 21 inches. The hand guard came from a block of aluminum that originated from the measuring system of a 1970's Blackhawk frame machine. Wood grip is hickory from a broken baseball bat. The pommel was well the right shape so I went with it. All epoxied and pinned.

I think it took me about 2-1/2 hours.

Neighbor has a new forge. I suspect there are a few new blades in my future.

Son told me earlier today he wants to learn some blacksmithing...

In high school machine shop class, lots of hunting knives were made.

We used chainsaw bar, files, or commercial band saw blades.

We would oil quench to help with the case hardening. Some really nice stuff was built over the years. There was also some crap. This was a good way to keep the burn outs busy while some of us used the real machine tools we had (lathes, Bridgeport mill, foundry, MIG, TIG, SMAW, gas welders).

A friend of mine still builds knives and he has posted some nice stuff on FB. The one I liked best started out as a wood rasp. He flattened down the teeth on the rasp and this became the handle. It was sort of like the wire rope knife posted above.
