Something I had never in my 60 years given any thought to, and now I can't un-see.

I found out about a month ago that Jeeps since the 1945 Willys CJ-2A have 7 slot grilles.

Always 7. Now, any time I'm on the road and I see a jeep I am consciously (or un), counting the slots.....and it seems to hold up.

Ask me when my best friend's birthday is, or how old he is? hmmmmmmmmm

Scott Douglas 02-05-2019 12:12 PM

Yup, 7. I think they have it patented or something so only they can use it too.

Yes. I believe there was a lawsuit at one time.

stevej37 02-05-2019 03:45 PM

signafies 7 continents in the world...which they have all been on.

"Respectable sources lend heavily in support of the notion that the Jeep was the first vehicle to have been deployed to serve on the soil of all seven continents during its tour of duty in the course of World War II. Having served in seven different theaters of war around the globe certainly deserves a high level of acclaim, or maybe a vertical bar for each?""

Yup, I was about to post this.

IIRC, GM got sued for using the 7-slotted grill on their Hummers which Chrysler/Jeep thought they had a copyright on.

Jeep lost.

But something tells me there was also some inconsistency with the number of slots GM used.

I wonder if it's an am general issue....

I had to go out and look and yes, there are seven on my Jeep, will this be that song you hear in your head forever now, looking at every jeep, or can it just be accepted and forgotten.

AZ,

You wouldn’t happen to know what paint code the desert tan on that HMMWV is, would you?

686 carc tan.
Nasty stuff to breath in. But apply oil on it for parades, and it shines!

Do you know who designed the flat grille on the original Jeep’s?

Ford, they found they could stamp the grille out of one piece quicker than the original design.

After the war, like was mentioned, the number of slots was changed to 7 and Jeep trademarked it.

911boost 02-05-2019 09:28 PM

And no I didn’t look it up, I actually saw it on one of the “Trucks” type shows on the Velocity channel as trivia and thought it was cool.

Planning on painting your jeep??

Crowbob 02-06-2019 02:28 AM

No. Don’t have a Jeep

I have a 1987 hard top Samurai that I’m going to go with a lusterless olive drab or desert tan when the time comes. Looking for a ‘military look’ just for fun.

I’ve never painted a car before, though.

This may be the referenced case

That is a different case than the GM/Jeep case. Jeep sued GM when the GM H2 based on the Suburban had a face too similar to Jeep at the time. Jeep lost that one.
