Anyone else getting 2018 Sales tax forms?
So, I've been receiving forms from a bunch of parts suppliers saying I bought $xxx of car parts from them in 2018 and they're reporting that figure to the state I live in because I may owe sales & use taxes.
WTF I have no issue with paying sales & use taxes but this is new. Are all internet sellers doing this now? |
We buy a lot of stuff on-line, and pay the sales tax at time of purchase. We have not seen any tax reporting forms from vendors.
What is the number of the form? We get and send a lot of 1099-Misc forms. |
Depending on what state you live in, or what state the vendor is in, you'll get it. Hasn't hit here in Fl yet (no state income tax, low state sales tax) but basically it is an issue with many/lots of purchases online so no sales tax unless vendor and buyer are in same state. There have been state laws, court cases, etc.
Been going on for a long time - here's a /. article from '99 when /. was the shiznit - https://slashdot.org/story/99/12/19/1943230/north-carolina-tries-to-tax-online-purchases |
Yeah, I wouldn't call it a form like a 1099, more like a statement out of their receivables system listing billings from 2018.
I too try to pay sales tax at the time of purchase. But if they don't have a sales tax system to calculate it and bill me at the time of invoicing, I guess they're falling back to this reporting after year-end. |
