Since there's not much reality in the plot there is no reason the method of intake can't be anything you want it to be.

As far as I know opioids are injected (IV or IM) or taken orally (swallow or sublingual) and some are transdermal (i.e. Fentanyl patch). These are the common opioids: Morphine, Heroin, Oxycontin, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Fentanyl, etc...
