Do they have different density foam inserts for the tires or are they sold separate?

I have been looking for all types of RC Cars lately. My son is 5 and has been through enough "cheap" cars that we could have purchased a real one by now. Seems like one of these crawlers would be good for a kid to learn as they aren't terribly fast.

I was really into the hobby in my teens, even raced them for a while on carpet. Unfortunately I gave away all of my cars and equipment 15 years ago.

I like the scale stuff. Some of the crawlers out there, like the "competition" level crawlers, just look like a huge insect to me. Yeah, all kinds of performance, but when it stops looking like anything "real", I kinda lose interest. The challenge, to me, is crawling within the limits imposed by a true to scale rig.

The trx4 are awesome looking.

Got my kids matching traxxas slash stadium trucks this Christmas. The nimhs at full power are a hoot to play with. Considered crawlers but ultimately felt jumping would be more fun. Oh and donuts.

Briefly toyed (pun intended) with the idea of a Traxxas/Gelande/Tamiya Land Rover Defender, painted/modded as a replica of mine. But then decided I really didn’t want to be ‘that guy’ walking along behind his R/C car. Plus I have enough one running/modding/maintaining the real thing, the last thing I need is another one!

I will get some pictures loaded up here of my Nightcrawler. It is awesome.

After lots of “midnight” runs after few beers in the SXS, we each bought RC Rock crawlers to break in the place of our full size ones.

Don’t kid yourself! RC sail boats are pretty cool! My son and I have been sailing a couple vintage pond boats. We’ve had a pretty good time with them.

Between my two boys I think we have six different Traxxas trucks at home, maybe two of them are working right now.:). Overall they have been great for kids, and parts are cheap and readily available.

I bought my son an indoor micro (team Losi) rock crawler when he was about 4. It was kinda fun for a while because it is easy to make courses inside with shoes, books, dishes etc. The novelty wore off pretty quickly for both of us though. We definately both prefer faster stuff.

Ive been into RC everything for 3/4 of my life. I think it is a great hobby for kids. My son could drive a bigger/faster model by 5 pretty well. We have alot of vehicles, but a good place to start for a 5yo I think would be one of the 1/16 Traxxas models. The brushless version may be a bit too fast for small areas, but they have a power limited training mode.


At work a bunch of us engineers have a 1/18th scale racing league. We have been doing it for a few years. Every month or so we choose a park and set up a course with cones. We have around 20 people participating. Tremendous fun! We get strange looks as adults playing with toy cars.

Aschen we have that same Losi min crawler. It is fun to drive over cushions and such. I was in a fantastic RC shop in PA this past December deciding on what to buy and the sales guy says to me 'hey, crawlers are fun for a bit but unless you are really really into it you'll get bored and then start wanting to jump stuff'.

So I went with the Slash 2wd and love 'em. actually a lot of fun on the street. best surface I think would be packed dirt with lots of jumps.

We have a Slash, Bandit VXL, Stampede, boat, 1/18 E-Revo VXL, and 1/18 Ken Block rally car. All from my boys (and me) over the last 10 years. One other nice thing, they are also water resistant which is pretty important with kids.

Many kids and dads have sidewalk or dirt 2wd speed jump machines. yes they are a hoot. Boats copters quads FPV and such............all fun, so was my Farrah Fawcett poster.

to an earlier reply. Yes many tires run full beadlocks so are tunable, same as tread durometer and grip patterns

and foam inserts , that I instantly remove and toss.


Think of it, as Airing down your tires, for grip traction deflection of tread.



Thats why I love these High end but BUDGET crawlers. The entire ready to run is $90 for everything. You'll spend $25-30 just on a set of new of tires alone.

Yes I did add $20 in aluminum shocks with custom oil shocks, but that's part of tuning and crawling.


Speed = $$$ > crawling. IMHO.........

I think the coolest looking is the Land Rover version. Lockable diffs and such right? 2 speed transfer cases?

Good to see tires have come down since I used to race.
