Do you know this guy?

You are working . Everything is just fine. Along comes joe jack know it all , know nothing. Starts to question why you are doing it a certain way. Tells you how he would do it, or how his uncle does it. Stops, or slows you from doing what you could do with your eyes closed , and then gets you involved in a dissertation about why his way is better.
Tells you what tools you need, and how they will make your job easier.
Meanwhile, he has never done it, only watched someone else do it, or read about it on the internet. Yet, you have done it your whole life .
I just had a guy walk in this morning while I was struggling to get some 10 ply truck tires to seat on big fat rims.
He keeps telling me I need to strap them, need to ether them. My way wont work.. His Dad always did them this way..... I got them on in 20 minutes, the same way I do it every time ,right after he left .
We have a guy at the rentals, who I am sending home first thing in the morning. I simply cannot work around or with him ever again. I will not.
he did this to me all weekend last week. he actually corrected the way, I was nailing a temporary 2x4 to the wall. So, not only is he not getting the work done he is supposed to , he is also holding me up from doing my job , all the while making me really angry by arguing with me.
I found myself arguing with him at least 5 times, while working on my own house doing stuff that I regularly do without any hassles .
There is nothing I love more than working with a true pro, and learning and watching how they do it. Really appreciate it when they are proud of their craft, and like to share with me .
There is nothing I hate more than working with a know it all , all talky, no worky guy.
I'm sure you all know one .
That is my Friday rant. have a good one boys !

As a contractor I really don'ta appreciate being told how to do my work. The worst offenders have in in order, engineers and dentists. I might listen to the homeowner until I can tell him why it's done the way I'm doing it. Usually I can give a few to several reasons.

A helper? No way, get out. Your customer in your shop? Well, that's probably why I never wanted a shop. It's gonna happen and with all the sihtty work I have had done over the years it might just be me.

Do you know this guy?

I went WiFi my father in law that worked for the local state wide electrical company. A big sub station that serves one customer had an issue. He said don’t touch anything and the was the best followed advice ever.
He met another old grey hair guy at the site. They exchanged maybe 10 words. Both did their job. No chit chat, no wasted steps. Soon it was fixed. The other guy left, we left. I asked if they did not like each other or what. He looked confused. He said they are long time best friends. They were working, no time to chat, and they can do that in the truck on the way to a repair next time. They just did not have anything to say except the steps they would preform to fix the issue.

Two guys the opposite of your guy. Both 100% competent at their jobs.

It happens, especially with a one man show.

I don't have the balls or sense to tell someone politely to just let me do my job.

I tell them after I reach the breaking point and it's ugly for everybody.

Now, Al, a complex resident where my shop is, worked for the railroad. To listen to him, which is all you do, drove the last spike in at Promontory, Utah in 1869. If there is beer later in the day, he will not exit. I got pals there I like to BS with and we are screwed. It's the Al show.

Here's my story. Al commands the party for two hours and then finally punches out. 8:00PM. Sixty seconds later, knock on the back man door and Al asks for a pencil and a piece of paper. He sketches a duck picture and shows us.

You can't make this stuff up.

You need one of those signs w the various labor rates, i.e. normal rate/if you want to help/if you worked on it before. Then you just point at the sign and explain why their labor will be double. :)

He lives across the street from me.

A little different scenario but here is what I do when contractors come to my house . I tell them up front that I am NOT going to tell them how to do the job .......... that's why I hired you or are going to hire you . But I also tell them up front I will ask questions as the job/task is being performed . I like to learn and I tell them that . I have yet to get any attitude from anyone . I think it helps with the feeling out process and generally gives me a better end result . I tell them I will lend a hand if needed , otherwise I stay out of their way . This has worked for me for a very long time .

Nothing better than watching a pro do his job. My electrician cousin does stuff for me once on while; quick, thorough and done right.

I’ll ask if so and so minds if I watch. Never a problem. I’ve discovered that most pros enjoy teaching and explaining stuff. Sometimes it looks like they’re doing an extra step when actually their experience has taught them doing it a certain way is more efficient in the long run and maybe not so obvious on the current job.

I’ve been known to hand Mr. Know-it-all the tool and just stepped back to watch. Usually, a quick apology ensues with no more ‘advce’.

Our "full stack" dev loves over complication, using absolutely every new feature in a language, and uses buzzwords constantly. Loves to talk about patterns, using reflection, abstraction, etc. for what is essentially really simple CRUD stuff.

Unfortunately, he's totally ignorant on security, doesn't really understand how HTTP works with status codes and content types, has no clue on anything system administration/configuration related, doesn't comment his code, insists on using "common shared code" for things like DB connections but he doesn't document their use or provide examples, and often breaks other code when he tweaks them with updates. He also drives a Mustang.

I've found a few exploitable bugs in just one part of our ERP system due to unnecessary use of hidden inputs on a web page that are then trusted on submission (ie, entire record is updated, not just fields that the user is allowed to edit). At least a user can only edit their own stuff, but fields that shouldn't be editable (ie, college provided primary email address) can be with the simple use of Chrome's dev tools debugger/inspector.

All that belly aching I did the other day and here we had the best crew we have had yet over the weekend.
I always take my buddy Alan. He is 60, and a little bit slow. He works at Wendy's, and they always jack with his hours. When the weather is good, he is a handyman, landscaper . In the winter, we always give him as much work as we can .
This guy works all day long without saying a word, except for "whats next "
We also just picked up this 20 year old kid. He has been with us for 3 weeks now.
There is hope for the future generations. He works like a dog, never once, did I see him with his phone out, and when we tried to pay him, he shortchanged his own hours .
When my partner called him out on it , he said" Im not really a painter, and I did not feel so good about the job i did upstairs. I did not want to charge for the whole time I was there"
He tried to take 3 hours off his pay. Honest, hard working, and polite . He did just fine, and we threw him extra instead.
Mr all talkie , no workie showed up 3 hours late, smelling like booze, worked for 3 and went home . he is fired .

I had to hire a mechanic to fix my forklift because I just didn’t have time. First guy couldn’t figure it out. Second guy was still scratching his head when I got back towards the end of the day. I tried to be friendly but he wanted no inter action what so ever. He finally found the coil to be bad. My thought was... one of the first things I would have checked.

Good for you to throw some hours Alan's way , sounds like an honest and hard working fellow . And it appears he raised his son with the same values and drive . Sounds like having these two on your crew is a win/win for all involved . Be careful when you terminate Mr. all talkie no workie ............ lots of crazies out there !
