Arizona_928 02-16-2019 11:28 AM

I think most of us need to be taking exercise tips from you.

One guy I talked to said the best advice he every got was never to get out of shape in the first place.

Sounds simple to do but grad school, getting registered and starting my own business got in the way.

Nice save!

Never counted.

I’ll get back to you on that.

If you perform them like Puddles, the Oregon mascot, yes.

I used to do lots of them, then I retired from the army. No more, I've done my share...and then some.

scottmandue 02-16-2019 03:29 PM

Somewhere around the 4th or 5th pushup I start getting a brain freeze...

Not trying to be a tough guy, read an interesting article this morning. I have been playing some sports lately but my strength training has been lacking for about 6 months now.

I was able to knock out 42 and I am not going to lie, it was not easy, the last 3 were fire.

Regular pushups or girl pushups?

URY914 02-16-2019 03:34 PM

I'll be happy to do some but you'll need to pay me.

The advice is good and it actually is pretty simple. I'm 56 and the 20-somethings at work are always asking how I stay in shape. I tell them I exercise 20 minutes a day, 6 days a week. They always say "No way - you can't look like you do with 20 minutes a day." "Over the years, it adds up" I tell them.

That amount seems like nothing, but it comes out to 3 hours (and 600 pushups, to stay on topic) a week. If my schedule's hectic, I'll even drop it to just 10 minutes and try to fit in another 10 later in the day. Consistency is much more important that duration and volume, ime.

And considering that over 90% of the people you meet over 40 do nothing, doing even a little puts you way ahead of the pack. In the land of the blind, a one-eyed guy does pretty good even if he needs glasses.

Funny, I wasn't thinking about how it added up.

I was thinking how much money in clothing I would have saved if I didn't get heavy and then slim over and over.

Actually it's been three cycles in my life, would have needed new clothes by now anyway. :D

It was great finding a 30 year old tee shirt this year hidden way in the back of my closet and wearing it.

It fit perfectly too.

It says "Death From Below" has a picture of a skull on it, and the name of my brother's old submarine on it.

I think that study has a lot of weaknesses. First and most important: Men who can do 40 real pushup (I'm talking if I put my fist under your chest you touch it and go back up) are working out on a regular basis. Pushups are not the cause of them not having heart disease, being fit and regular exercise is.

That’s what I was thinking. It certainly doesn’t sound like they’ve found any magical causal relationship.

rusnak 02-16-2019 05:36 PM

All through high school and college I could do 300 pushups non-stop. It was part of my warmup before judo and weight training.

Funny that this thread popped up as I was thinking about getting back into shape. Business and life has been too hectic to have that all important meditation time.

porsche930dude 02-16-2019 06:45 PM

I havnt done pushups in probably 15 years. I just did a quick 9 then a few minutes later did 20 my left arm was crunching and cracking the first 5 lol I actually had no idea what id be able to do. Maybe ill keep practicing till i can do like 50 thatd be nice
