Car paint issue
 

My sister bought a Honda mini-van, new, 5 years ago. It is now having an issue where paint from all over the vehicle is starting to crack and peel. I know nothing about paint and body work. I'll do anything mechanical, but the last car I painted was a college car in 1986.

Again, she bought this new 5 years ago. Looks to me like an adhesion issue with the primer. It is occurring on the outside of the car as well as inside, so it seems like it isn't some sort of light induced degradation.

Or do you think this was possibly damage repaired before the car was sold?

If it is happening all over the vehicle then I doubt it is accident repair . It sure looks like the paint is not adhered to the primer . I would suggest taking it back to where it was purchased if possible . See what they have to say , be polite and no confrontation you are trying to get facts. Also see if there are any recalls or service bulletins regarding paint issues on that year and model . Maybe stop by a local body shop and see what they have to say . Good luck

There are quite a few hits for paint quality issues on Honda's if you do a search. Seems they have honored extended warranties in some cases.

She talked to the dealer, but they and Honda Corporate are not being helpful. I'm not even sure what they can do. With the paint peeling off, you would need to sand down the entire car and re-paint.

Yes, they are years and paint codes they have programs. Hers is not one of those.

Every_single_white_Chrysler_minivan I've seen in the last 40 years had peeling paint.

Interesting. White usually doesn’t apply a clear coat.

Looking at the photos... If I had to guess that is not original Honda paint.

Back yard paint job for sure. (Mainly because the whole thing is failing)

^^^^^ Just what I was thinking - a crappy job of repaint. Maybe she or you can do some detective work to find out more about it. Is it Los Panchos time?

That was my immediate thought but OP makes it clear she bought it new.

That's a repaint. Subsurface wasn't prepped and the base coat shrunk. Maybe the base and primer weren't compatible. It would be interesting to test paint thickness.

Maybe something happened and Honda had it repainted before they sold it.

It wouldn't be the first new car that needed to be repainted before it was sold.

My neighbor, a retired Professional Engineer (Electrical), bought a new 2015 Honda Odyssey from the local Honda dealer. In a matter of days, it developed a rattling noise in the right rear of the vehicle. We checked the spare tire for tightness under the vehicle and a number of other things trying to figure out what was rattling.

He wound up taking it back to the dealership to have them look into it. The service manager told him there were 2 things that they do at the dealership: 1) replace parts and 2) upload firmware to computer systems. An "adjustment" to panels that don't fit right and rattle wasn't in the scope of their service/warranty.

So the neighbor, not liking what the service manager tells him, set up an appointment with the regional Honda rep at the dealership. He gets the same answer as given to him by the service manager, but with the added "they all make that rattle, and we will make note of your issue and send it on to the engineering department so that maybe next years vehicles won't have that rattle".

3 years and 75,000 miles later I rode with my neighbor in his Honda. What a log truck. Rattles everywhere. He wound up getting "lucky" by having a fellow in a monster Ford truck run him off the highway one night that resulted in the Odyssey being totaled. Insurance paid him off and he was finally out of that vehicle.

It was a brand new car, so unless it was done at the dealership, this is a factory job. It does look like, from the provided link, that other cars of her model and year are having similar problems.

She has gone to the dealer and she has contact corporate. I suggested she contact a local TV station and get their "problem solver" involved.

The only way this will get fixed is if they get enough adverse publicity that someone in marketing takes note.

Go public.

Looks identical to what happened to virtually all of the crystal white Mazda Miatas from 1991 and many from 1992, such as mine.

Keep up the Internet research and go public. It’s good that she has it on record at the dealer and corporate

Honda had paint issues a few years back with dark blue, green, & black Accord and Civic. Enough owners pitched a fit that they finally did the right thing.
One of the bodyshops I refer people to was doing quite a few of them. I seem to recall it was only certain panels that were covered.
I also remember him saying it seemed like more of those were effected by hot arid climates, Az, Tx, Ca etc.

Well, I’m not a paint expert but that is terrible quality. Funny how you can find some old chalky neglected BMW/Porsche from 50 years ago, wet sand, cut, buff and it bounces right back.

Damage to new cars in transit is very common.

Virtually every manufacturer has a full body shop at port of entry to fix damage before it gets to the dealer.

Dealers fix stuff that happens between the port and their lot.

I can't imagine anyone would have repainted an entire car.

If it showed up at the dealer needing a repaint they'd likely reject it.

Even though they have their own shop it's still going to cost them in time and materials.

The only way I see it is if something drastic happened at the dealer lot that their insurance did not cover.

Not saying it's not possible, just seems unlikely.
