60’s BMW R50 R60/2
Having recently turned 60, been thinking about buying a bike of similar vintage. Not even sure why....just jonsing for a nice vintage bike to futz with a bit. Visited the Barber Museum last week with Mrs. Choc, that may have had some influence.
I bid on a 1960 R50/2 on BAT yesterday but it went for stupid money ($16k). Any owners or experience with restored, or better, unrestored well maintained /2’s? They seem to be around if you look a bit with prices all over the map.

I have a 1968 50/2. Very much unrestored and original although not a numbers matching case. It has great patina and I plan to leave it that way. Great little bike to as you say, futz around with. Top speed is like 80mph and it takes a while to get there. Brakes are not at all modern in their performance. Comfortable riding position. Happy to answer other questions. I sold off a few bikes in the last couple of years including a beautiful 92 900SS Ducati but kept this one. More my speed I suppose at this stage of my life :-)

That’s a great pic Jerry. I’d prefer to find a nicely maintained unrestored example. Hoping to find something under 5 figures but realize that may be difficult. As my search unfolds, yes, I’ll cerainly follow up with questions!

I did a 1963 r60 all the way down and back up. I went a little overboard but it’s living-room quality.

I have a friend who just bought a 60/2 (pic below) out of a guys ragged collection and then a second bike with a /5 motor transplant in it. That motor looks really out of place on the bike. Would make a cool cafe bike possibly. One of the reasons he bought it was the /5 motor'd bike has the fenders off of the other one on it. I think he paid like $6,500 for the /2 that needs sorting out as it is non running.

I mechanically rebuilt a 25/3 a few years back. Beautiful bikes.
I occasionally look for a /2 at a reasonable price but have yet to pull the trigger on one. As with cars I'd go for non restored DD type bikes. /5 motors in /2 bikes are, to me, one step above LS 911 transplants. ![]()
