OK, here's some serious trivia.
Better than Jonus Grumby being the skipper character's real name on G.I.

.................................................. ...........

The voice of drooper (the lion character) was done by Sam the butcher from the Brady bunch.

Horror thriller? That can't be right. I grew up watching the show. :(

Jim Richards 02-20-2019 02:50 PM

The article mentions they were around in the 60s. I never heard of them. Thankfully.

I remember seeing re-runs after school in the early 70s.
IIRC it was replaced by old shows of the mickey mouse club.

They tried to copy of the zany antics of the monkeys. Didn't work, but was stupid enough to be funny for a short attention span.

A little known factoid..........................the 'Splits became a ratings hit later in the season of their first year and continued to gain momentum into their second year. By the third, the network changed some props and small things including a different camera shot of their original intro / theme but touted as 'all new'.

Result? Lots of kids tuned in initially after much hype, but they thought they were re-runs of the first two seasons (as from a kids point of view didn'd look much different) and instantly turned the channel.

Shame really as it became a ratings giant towards the end and the network squeezed the production costs and subsequently killed it.

Also the show was responsible for introducing the 6 wheel ATV to the rest of the country.........

Sammy...I can't remember how long it took me to find that Dickies version while looking several months ago...all I had was the lyrics, and it never came up on a search. Nice to know I've got a place to find it now!

For some reason, that version makes me think of "Nice Legs, Shame About the Face" SmileWavy

eta: I seem to remember the Banana Splits leading into HR Puffinstuff on Sat. mornings

GH85Carrera 02-21-2019 05:12 AM

We used to watch them in the late 60s or early 70s when we lived in Hawaii. Like most boys mostly I wanted one of the "cars" the rode around in. The little 6 wheel amphibious things. I don't remember anything about the series however except they were funny.

That show used to give me a the willys as a small kid. That and that HR Puffenstuff show, which I kind of mentally classify with the Banana Splits in terms of same timeframe/genre/weirdness factor. The latter could still give me nightmares, I think.

Wasn't there a related show about pirates on an island, or was that part of the Banana Splits show?

Back when we had like three channels to watch...

I wasn't born until long after the show was cancelled, but I remember re-runs as a toddler in the early 80's. I recall the show scaring the crap out of me. I probably cried until my mom changed the channel. I still get creeped out when I see it.
