My hometown. One two punch. Now; flooding

You all see this crazy biblical level flooding?

I’m in San Diego. Thankfully my wife is okay at home. I wish I was home just in case.

This is a pic from a gas station just 5 miles down hwy12 from my office. It’s technically in the town of Sebastopol, but damn! I’m so over rain.

But I’m reminded. I really need a kayak. :)

Don't want to live close to the Russian river...Any river for that matter. Homesteaders quickly leaned that in the mid 1800's. Modern man didn't believe them.

We had some serious flooding here this past weekend. We've had about 18" of rain so far this year and got 5" last Saturday. February was the wettest February ever recorded here. This was my front yard. There is typically no water there and in the pic below it was about 150 feet across and about 6 feet deep.

Dude.
Didn't know squat about Sebastopol, so I giggled it.

Wiki says:

Quote:

Sebastopol is situated on the edge of the Laguna de Santa Rosa, which is fed by Santa Rosa Creek and other tributaries, including three minor tributaries within the city limits – Zimpher Creek, Calder Creek and Witter Creek. The Laguna is a wetland area that is home to many species of wildlife and vegetation, and divides the town from the neighboring Santa Rosa. Nearly every winter the Laguna floods, cutting off State Route 12, and often flooding the low-lying businesses and homes on the eastern side of Sebastopol.
Cerial?

It always makes me shake my head, folks build next to the pretty river because it is pretty when it is low. The area grows, and more pavement and buildings just add to runoff. Then a flood hits, and it starts flooding every few years. But the locals always vow to rebuild. Rinse and repeat. All along the Mississippi right now they are having or expecting flooding, again.

Vash, I hope your wife and house stay safe from the flood. Good Luck.

Floods suck. A couple of years ago the water came up so fast I wss evacuation in a dump truck. They used a front loader to get us into the truck bed. Didn't get into my place but the homes south of me went under.

Local TV stations know where the usual flood areas are. So, after every heavy rain in Portland they head to the Johnson Creek area. It's as predictable as the rain itself.

Each time, I'm sure they say something like: "I've never seen anything like this before!"

There was a great video a few months ago of a reporter apparently standing in a flooded street. In the middle of his report, a few people walk by in the water behind him, barely getting their shoes wet. Apparently it was a big puddle and he was kneeling in the deepest part to make it look deeper.

It must be one of the right of passage for any reporter to go stand in the flood waters. It must be required to keep you job as a reporter.

flooded 912

East Tennessee - 100 year rains they keep saying. It may be true but what is true is I've got two flooded Porsche's, fresh water . 912E and a 911SC. Water up to top of seats. Fuse box dry, under seat computer submerged.
Besides the obvious interior issues what am I looking at in terms of getting them street worthy ? Brake fluid flush, new clutch, trans and oil flush ???
Just asking - someone out there has some experience in this.
Pictures a few years old, the BelAir flooded as well.
Thanks Dennis

Vash, I saw some pictures of Guerneville yesterday, sure looks bad. I know a couple women there that have a stone sculpture shop, I am guessing it got flooded too.

GH85Carrera 02-28-2019 12:08 PM

With water to the seats, I would guess the engines and transmissions are full of water and silt. It will take a lot of work to really fix the cars. Sorry for your loss. Good luck.

Keep it up and I'll post a pic of a tipped over lawn chair.

There was coincidentally an article in Knoxville‘s paper today talking about how Knoxville‘s weather has been trending hotter and wetter since 1980.

Op-ed?

Sooner or later 02-28-2019 01:43 PM

Sorry to hear, Mountainman. Hope it isn't as bad as it appears.

Nope. An article backed up with data from the National Center for Environmental Information. The numbers don‘t lie. I‘ve lived in this area for over 40 years. It is much warmer and wetter than it used to be.

stealthn 02-28-2019 04:40 PM

Sad to hear, wishing you the best.

I have been teaching my boys for years to respect and understand nature; never build in a river valley, below a natural snow shoot in the the mountains, etc. There are enough obstacles Mother Nature can throw at you without a head start...

KFC911 03-01-2019 02:49 AM

^^^ Mother Nature scoffs at us maroons....some of us anyways.
