Health question kids...adenoids...

Hello Pelican friends.

Our five year old (born and raised in Japan) seems to have some breathing issues, along with snoring, frequent ear infections etc. We originally though he might be allergic to something but the ear, nose, throat Dr. said it was enlarged adenoids.

My Japanese isn’t good enough to understand all the nuances of the diagnosis and issues, but he seems to think he will outgrow the condition.

Currently my wife has a friend who’s son had similar issues and their Doctor said he wasn’t sleeping well due to the adenoid problem.
So they decided to have surgery to remove his adenoids and tonsils.

I really don’t want to go through the surgery if it’s not necessary...

Before we get a second opinion I’d like to hear more first hand accounts.

Any thoughts on the matter.

When our son was about five we were also told he should have his adenoids removed. After much research and thought we decided against removal. Ultimately, he grew and the adenoids were no longer an issue. I guess the real questions are: how frequent are the ear infections? Is he losing lots of school? Is the snoring accompanied by sleep apnea? Does his breathing stop when he sleeps? Our son did not have apnea in conjunction but if his breathing was disrupted we probably would have. Good luck.

Adenoids are part of your immune system, it used to be they always were taking them out, now not so much, unless they are causing trouble. MUCH easier to go through as a kid than an adult.

I wonder about the incidence of adenoid and tonsil removal and later onset of autoimmune issues. Any research into this?
