Seats for 986

Hi,
I swapped out my shift knob on my 00 Boxster. The seats look a bit under inspiring now with the new shift knob. Anyone have any suggestions for seats.
Need to be black and able to fold forward (Engine Access). Because of the whole electronics issue, anyone have any good ideas for Plug and play seats? Open to buying brackets too? Looking to spend $1,500 or less. I will be using for mostly street with maybe some autocross.
Suggestions, pictures?
Thanks,
David

I think any aftermarket option will require new brackets, I'm not aware of any that are plug and play. Most name brand brackets made for the Boxster will allow you to move over your seat belt buckles, which have the SRS sensors in them. Your price range will limit you to Corbeau or a lower end Sparco, new Recaros start at about $1k each. Unless you can find a good deal on a used pair. Another option would be to get a used set of OEM 9X6 sport seats which are a nice upgrade, or just find another set of nicer stock seats. I think the 9X7 seats will also bolt into a 9X6 but I'm not 100% certain.

Do some searching on 986forum, there are several good threads on aftermarket seats so you know what fits. I considered swapping seats with my last 986 but ended up cheaping out, good seats are expensive.

Thanks Matt.
I think the sport seats might be the way to go. I do like the way they look and they are quite comfortable.
I'll do some digging around.

I've seen nice Porsche sport seats hard backs for that generation for 1000-1500.

I like the originality. Plug and play.

Gt3 seats will cost you around 3000

Then whatever aftermarket you like. You will need brackets, airbag mods, seatbelt receptacle mods.

I'll go with Porsche sports

A new shift knob, the classic slippery slope of Porsche ownership.

:)

The sport seats are a huge step up in comfort and support, I love them. It's also the easiest plug and play option, so good plan!

The Slope has been slipping for a few years now. Every year I add a little. I got my suspension where I want it, the sound is great (IMO), Short shift in place, hardtop on (nice having options). All I have left is the seats and maybe a new steering wheel. I am keeping the outside stock. Don't want to mess with a good design.

I was foolish enough to buy a GT3 seat for the M491. Comfy, though nothing to write home about and 60 lb. so it had to go. Everyone has their priorities, but If I'm going for a sportier seating position, I'm also reducing weight.

Cobra, Recaro, Braum, etc. all have some nice sport seats to consider.

Cobra makes some incredible stuff, but you're not getting a pair of those for $1500. I do agree on reducing weight though, even the OEM base model seats are heavy.

Agree Matt. I would recommend 1 seat per year. Passengers can suffer for a year in the original seat. :)

Exactly. Plus passengers add weight, so you save seat + passenger.

LOL, that was my first thought too. In a few years, as he takes out a 2nd mortgage on the house to pay for a custom twin turbo 3.6 swap and wonders how he got there....

"It started with a knob":D

Oh Shaun, the old Targa. I loved that car. Cruising Harvard square. That hit all the sensory buttons. I won't say you should have kept again, I just won't.

Regarding seats, I am sure i can find something decent used, I may go up a bit. My level of excellence is a lot lower than most. I can't justify much more for seats in a $10k car.

Shaun @ Tru6 03-05-2019 03:28 PM

It was a great car, lots of it went into the Master Bennet car. It's OK to have not kept it, though I have him to blame for parting it out. Only car I've ever regretted selling is my 69E.

eBay is your best friend for seats.

You need a set of these: Nissan Juke Nismo RS seats

there were two sets on eBay for about $3k for the pair but neither seller would weigh them. Look like fantastic seats.

DWBOX2000 03-05-2019 04:36 PM

That ain't happening. I have to report to a higher power. 😄

For minimum size and weight (and no option for direct plugin) go with Lotus Elise seats.

It's what all of the miata folks want.

Sometimes you can get lucky and find something used on Craigslist. There’s a pair of SRD style Recaros on Tulsa Craigslist right now for $900.
