Hey, computer guys or forum gurus...

Can you add a better search engine to a phpBB forum? I've emailed the folks at phpBB but haven't heard anything, so I thought I'd tap the never ending depth of the PPOT brain trust SmileWavy

Allow google/bing/et al to index (remove any blocks in /robots.txt)

ie that's Greek to me :)

I know zero...how do I go about securing such for a forum?

You can just search with google.
Type in:
search terms site:forums.pelicanparts.com

or by subforum:
search terms site:forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/

it will return results like this:
https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C2OKWM_enUS773US773&safe=strict&source =hp&ei=EhR_XOycOYnt-gSStZTQAg&q=major+rice+site%3Aforums.pelicanparts. com&btnK=Google+Search&oq=major+rice+site%3Aforums .pelicanparts.com&gs_l=psy-ab.3...686.8836..8966...0.0..0.81.1945.37......0.. ..1..gws-wiz.......0j0i131j0i22i30j33i299j33i160.XrTXHHmNZv A

No problems here and on other V Bulletin sites. The Google trick does work though and with less than the 3 character minimum.

I've never had an issue with the search feature here...or anywhere really. Been doing searches before Al Gore invented the Internet though. Throw out an example or two of your searches here ....mebbe we can assist with better search "words", etc.?

Rickysa 03-06-2019 07:37 AM

I should have mentioned up front that I've had no probs searching here!!

There is another website I frequent that is much like here in that it involves restoring old gems, specifically Bertram 31 boats.

And like this site (as discussed in the "who is still here" thread) many of the common questions have been answered when the iron for rebuilding was hotter several years ago...hence newcomers are faced with searches to help find answers.

On the phpBB (bertam) board, it is cumbersome for an old fart like me to properly code a search with the proper Boolean functions...I've seen on some sites a google search box that works just on the forum you are on. I had hoped to provide such a service for that forum if possible, I just haven't figured out how.

btw...KC ya wanna go fishin' sometime SmileWavy

If it is betram31.com there is no robots.txt and so it should be google-able

Example in google or duckduckgo, enter

waterline site:betram31.com

Which gets you

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=waterline+site%3Abertram31.com&t=lm&atb=v1-1&ia=web

All threads on their forums.

If it isn't betram31.com let us know and we can help.

Rickysa 03-06-2019 08:19 AM

^^That's the one!

Thanks all :)

Well poo, I copied/pasted into google and got:

Quote:

Your search - waterline site:betram31.com - did not match any documents.
Duckduck:
