The flange and the exhaust pipe parted ways on my ancient JD LT160 (has 900+ hours on it) a couple of days ago. I have been soaking the nuts/studs holding the flange to the head as one of them is a bit rusty. Will heat the nuts as hot as I can get them using a propane torch (it's all I've got) and hope neither one snaps off. If one snaps I don't think there is any way I could ever drill it out. If they come off ok I will order a muffler, if not then decision time ??

UPS delivered new draft blower assembly for the water heater. I went home, installed it, water is heating now. The family is besides themselves. You'd think they were the Donner Party. A few days without hot water, you can't imagine the whining.

The motor was out but only the entire $250 assembly is sold. Well I just found a used motor on eBay and I'm buying it, so that I have a complete replacement assembly ready for the next time our family faces certain death by cold shower. Sheesh

I’m fixing my vintage house

I bought an old 50s piece of shot house
It’s all I could afford

I thought about ripping out the crappy kitchen and installing a clean new cheap ikea kitchen

Then I realized that I have a 50s kitchen
A50s kitchen is all the rage

So I am restoring it

jyl 03-12-2019 02:14 PM

Oh yes, restore don't replace that!

Learned a new one today or my memory was refreshed.

Rotors and pads on a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. Rotors are turn-able with 70k. Shop down the road has a machine. $10 cash each.

Put them on with pads and new bracket hardware. Brakes are vicious yet there are scratchy noises......everywhere. Rotational rubbing.

Turns out there is slag rust on the outside diameter of the turned rotors 1/32nd to 1/16th inch thick. Rubs on the new bracket tin.

All four wheels off, tippy tap with a hammer to shatter off the rust build up. Silent now.

Had I known or remembered this, it was only a 10 minute job max to tap the grunge off when on the bench.

Current project is a 1962 Moon Rocket slide.

It's currently in a million pieces so putting it all back together and up in our yard should keep me busy for a bit.

Weighs about 3000# so may take a little help to place.

Photo is not my slide but the same make & model.

We wanted one forever but there aren't a ton of them left. Over the years safety regulations forced most of them to be removed from school and park playgrounds. There used to be thousands of them across the country and there's currently about 60 or so still standing.

It's hard to explain but my wife and I feel like just looking outside and seeing it will make us smile. :)

That slide is effing cool. My kids are probably too big for it, but it’d still be cool to have!

We don't have kids but will be more than happy to just set up a couple of lawns chair and look at it. :)

Heating contractor knocked out blocking/supports back in 1997 when the house was built. Above the 2x4s I put in there is a point load (4x4). Before I jacked & blocked, the subfloor had settled about 1/2"

Going to make a heck of a Christmas decoration!

Maybe some of those Phillips Hue lights.

I'd want to get a comfy chair or at least some comfy cushions in there and chill in the stars.

Funny that you mention Christmas decorations - we currently still have our one decoration on display. It's a 12' vintage fiberglass Santa.

Lighting would be nice. Be fun to do a one-time video with a smoke machine under it so it looked like liftoff was coming. :)

Vincent, if you are doing seams or largeish patches, you might want to use double sided sailmakers tape to hold things where you want them while running it thru the machine.
Lay the material out flat and unloaded, then apply the tape to the bottom layer, then place top piece or patch material smoothly in place and press together.

It should now run thru the machine and come out like you asymbled it..

It also helps to orient any patch material with the weave of the surrounding material.

Sailmakers have their machines set into the floor or very large table, which makes it much easier to keep things in place as you feed them thru the machine.
Hope that helps.

Cheers Richard

Thanks! You are way ahead of me. I replaced a few grommets, more tools!, repaired a rip around one and then a ~8" section close to the luff. Last thing is a few spots on the leech are shaggy. Yeah, really need a new sail. Only broke 2 needles so far :) I'm learning.

Newest project was to get power to the new bandsaw. Not hard but I'm not 100% comfortable with AC so I go slow and tripple check everything. I need to make new handrails for the cabin top, so far I'm made lots of kindling.

Been a day of normal maintenance items. Trash out, water softening system serviced, dish washer filters cleaned, trying to fix the ignition switch on my little tractor.

Jims5543 03-17-2019 03:25 PM

Taking the E30 on a 700 mile road trip to Wilmington NC and back. Had some small nagging items that needed sorting and I wanted to go over her once good before the trip next week. She was due for a oil change so I did that too.

The fan for the HVAC was only running on 4 sometimes, other times it would work fine. This is the culprit.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars/n-jS...wX8GNDK-XL.jpg

Swapped cars make everything harder. The part I needed to change is inside the fire wall under the windshield wipers. There are 4 screws holding the cover in place. One screw was right behind the swapped engine, all I could fit in there was some needle nose pliers and a socket locked in the jaws. It took me about 30 minutes of cursing to get the screw out. I did not put it back in.

I also installed a new strut brace that I bought and never put on, I had a cheap one on there from when I first purchased it.

https://photos.smugmug.com/Cars/n-jS...cvpP33V-XL.jpg

I also fiddles with the new headlight assemblies I installed, the headlights needed adjusting and I finally figured out how to do that.

BTW - That 60's Rocket slide was instant nostalgia, I remember climbing in those when I was a little kid. Coolest thing I have ever seen.

Thank you! It won't be on the scale of your absolutely amazing shop build but it should present it's own set of fun challenges.

We're currently arranging for a space to work on it. It's about 28 feet long and 10 feet wide so this one's a bit too big to work on in our garage.

For some reason I tend to collect giant things so it's always a matter of shuffling.

Finally finished work on the FIL's old guitar. Cracks in the solid wood back were steamed and glued together. Bridge was glued back on and clamped for a week and I was able to adjust the machine head for the low E. The machine heads are not period correct but maybe one day.
After touching things up with a light sanding and a thin coat of sealer, I re-strung with a set of extra light strings. Everything is tight now. There are no rattles or buzzing and the tone is bright. I've been playing it a lot this week and thinking about the FIL. I think he would be pleased.

My MIL says he bought it used sometime in the 40s it was an old guitar then. She was glad to hear it being played again.

Sprayed a couple low voltage LED Wall Washer landscape fixtures with Zinc Galv spray to help corrosion proof them.

I did this to a couple last year and so far they show zero signs of corrosion. ;)

If I could get these in plastic, PVC, or fiberglass - I would.

The powder coated aluminum units aren't too band.

Either way.....it pays to be proactive when you're on the coast!

My brother is moving into a new place that has a shop that is a blank canvas.
We've been putting in a mezzanine to store all his parts etc.
Last week we turned two doors into one big one.
Tomorrow we'll be finishing up some of the flooring for the mezz and building a new wall to finish the last bay.
Just two old guys having fun together, working as a team to get 'er done.

That's awesome, Scott. I wish my brother had that kind of personality. With him everything is a competition and he has to be the smart one - or he pouts. Not very fun to be with someone like that.

Yesterday finished the fence with gate I was building. I made the gate from scratch and had to attach it first and then the pickets to get the proper incline.

Here is the gate being built on my driveway:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1553731505.JPG

I used Deckmate screws on the whole thing including the pickets. Much easier than nailing and I expect more security and longevity from them than I would nails.

We have a 4 wheeled yard cart that tips for hauling hay, firewood, or bags of feed across the muddy ground at home. I have already "fixed" the rear bushings so I only needed to "Fix" 2 more wheels. The cheap azz bearings in the wheels have seized, or broken apart inside of 1 year (didn't even think to check them). At work I found some aluminum round stock that I put on the lathe, and drilled out the centers to match the wagon axle diameter. I then cut to length, some conduit to act as a sleeve over the top of the round stock (had to mill off 1 mm on both O.D. of the aluminum round stock to fit the I.D. of the conduit). I will coat a liberal application of red grease to every surfce like I did on the other set already done. This took about an hour, and cost me nothing. The bushings that I already finished work like a charm, and a couple of washer help hold the excess grease on the sliding surfaces.

Spent all f****** day fixing my Bosch dishwasher. Wash pump sheared its impeller in two. Between waiting for parts and being too busy, We've been without the dishwasher for two weeks. Got it together today to determine that the inlet fill valve is bad, probably didn't fill in the first place, and that's what killed the pump. I replaced that valve 12.5 months ago - out of warranty...

red-beard 03-30-2019 09:30 PM

So, Thursday engine 2 was back together and the gas skid was "mostly" working. Ran E2 most of the day, as we screwed around with programming the PLC on the gas skid.

1:30AM Thursday Night/Friday morning E2 dropped a valve.

The piston was beat to crap!

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1554009890.jpg

Fortunately, we stock all of the parts and had the crew onsite for the top end cleaning. E2 was back on-line around 1PM.

E1 was nearly complete on Thursday and was on-line before 9AM.

I started working on an old 1950s chainsaw im not sure what brand it is got a power products engine. I got it from a barn at an estate sale last weekend. Iv got to cut up a bunch of huge oak logs so id like to use it. I even have a big bar and chain that might fit it. Its got spark but doesnt fire even with gas in the cyl. I pulled off the tillotson and the reed valves were a bit stuck open. Thats as far as i got.

Evans, Marv 03-31-2019 04:09 PM

Replaced my old swing today with a new one. Took a decent amount of time to assemble. Can't be without a swing, you know.
