Safety Upgrades on my Pinball Machines
I’ve added some fuses to the bridge rectifiers on my mid 80s pinball machines and have begun replacing the incandescent bulbs with LEDs. Here’s a photo of the boy doing quality assurance testing.

Sprayed a rust removal product this morning at a client's property......worked pretty good!
$12.77 shipped to my door (Amazon) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565888464.JPG Before: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565888464.JPG After: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1565888464.JPG |
Some days things fall into place. Several years ago, I retired a rear rim because it was getting soooo thin from brake wear, I was afraid it would break. This saturday, I filled it up with air to see what it would look like on the bike, and KAPOWWWW!!!!!
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567433776.JPG Fortunately, I saw it coming, and had previously ordered a NEW rear rim, which showed up several hours later: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567433776.JPG Not missing a beat, I got to rebuilding it- never mind It was a 36 hole rear rim, and I had a 32 hole hub, but that's a different story. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567433776.JPG Ultimately, I am restoring my 1985 Schwinn MTB, It's taken me to some cool places, and will get a complete restoration- here it is in some sand at Hilton Head SC. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567433776.JPG |
Building a rocket stove. I don't think there's any 2 alike.
|
Gas power washer. After removing/cleaning/lubricating the unloader valve multiple times, gave up last week and ordered a replacement pump from Amazon. $70, back in business, might be pressure than new.
|
Renovating the kitchen. New rear doors to deck already installed, just finished the drywall around them yesterday, finished the painting today.
Still to go: refinishing the pine floor, installing a couple more cabinets and building a utility cabinet, installing a ceiling fan/light, and (ugh) new counter tops. This house was built in 1939 as a low budget cottage, but it has great construction with plaster walls and ceilings, and oak flooring except in the bathroom and kitchen. |
Office Max chair shock. Most of them are one-size-fits-all. But not this Office Max.
The big one is the standard replacement. The old shock's lower half is retracted inside and leaking. This "creative design" is reversed, with the bigger half on top. The lower half is the width of a big pencil and sits on a small roller bearing This sits inside a plastic reducer sleeve, which was breaking and had to be knocked out. The seat also had to be removed and a hole drilled in the bracket to be able to knock the old one out the top. I'm hoping the new one will slide in, after the crimps are ground off the inside of the tube. Why did they have to add crimps and warp the tube? Uggh. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567871924.jpg |
It is so damn close..
I cut off the indented top section and smoothed out the insides with a sanding bit. Still no fit. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567905217.jpg The tube was made too small on purpose and already paper thin. Manual sanding was out of the question. No honing tool. Getting frustrated now. (Danger stupid brain territory ahead.) The inside diameter needed to be reduced!!! I did not have a lathe or chuck to shave 1/32 from the outside of the shock (thankfully), and thinking of some way to hold it while sanding down the outside on sandpaper in a hole. Layers of aluminum foil would hold it in place in a door hole saw...right? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567905231.jpg That was not going to work. Bad idea. Then I tried a few hours of using an 8" flexible paint removal disk. Back and forth. Its was marked in a spiral with a Sharpie to show what was already done. Shock was fully extended to disperse heat. When the back side got warm it was put on ice for a few minutes. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567905380.jpg But eventually after a few thou I chickened out. The best and simplest solution was to cut expansion slots in the tube. I cut a "T" at the bottom of each to allow for a "shelf". http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567906377.jpg Three or four hose clamps will finish it off. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1567906391.jpg |
Tonight I changed out the 3 cushions on my couch for one long one. Ordered a piece of foam from Amazon - sucker is 5" thick! Had to cut off about 10" from one end - the width was perfect. I could have used the 4" thick size but I thought what the heck - another inch of thickness can't hurt - right?
I have a piece of fabric over it and tucked under the sides as a cover. Not sure how this will end up but gotta be better than the old worn out cushions that kept shifting on me. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1568420116.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1568420116.JPG |
Then earlier today they set the top (remaining) half of the spiral staircase for the remodel project next door.
I'm always interested in a project when a crane is involved. :p http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1568420314.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1568420314.JPG I was wondering if they made a breathalyzer for these things because the neighbor lady is a lush and that's pretty high up for someone who is a little tippy! |
Funny, I'm machining some Delrin swivel chair inserts for the MCM dealer I work for. He also brought in a halogen lamp that I tested months ago but he had the wrong bulb. New bulb and still no light so he brought it back. Still showed 123 v at the pins but also showed 123 v when sliding the inline dimmer. I cut out the dimmer and light goes on.
That's a new one to me. Dimmer on order to match the pair. |
Reassembled the Kuhn drum mower yesterday. New blades and a quick test :it cuts like new. Time to put it away until next summer.

My 21 year old Trane AC went out at the house, hoped it would be something simple. like the motor, that I cam replace, sadly, the compressor is bad, so time for a complete unit. Man the cost has gone up since I replaced mine 21 years ago.
|
I just had a family member deliver and install an a/c unit in our home. House never had a/c, so he did it all. He lives in Orlando, bought all the stuff there, and hauled it and the family to Texas for a week. It was around $5K for all of it.
Today, I'm removing a transmission throttle (kickdown) cable from the old Camry transmission, and will install it in the replacement. The dismantler tried to cut through and ruined the cable on the replacement. Off comes the pan, valve body, etc... |

The 7yo Delta had stopped rotating and the based cracked and leaking. Garbage.
The new is taller for comparison. Need at the very least 15" plus 6+" height for about all of them. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569427190.jpg *Spray function is good for washing food in a strainer. Must be sure the pull hose is clear of all pipes underneath and lines straight. *Only one center nut. This one was lacking screw-in plates for the other two holes and will flex with my cheap sink basin. I shimmed up a board underneath under the back shelf as a brace. *Also used silicone sealant around the base and was careful to make sure the very thin base washer (which wanted to pop out) was kept in place. Had to pull on the hose to make sure everything stayed seated while tightening the nut from underneath. The nut was small and oblong to slip over the hose fittings and didn't wand to thread easily. *The red hose was hooked to the hot water pipe but the function was still reversed from the dots on the handle. Oh well. |
Porch light quit working last month so I got busy and found the exact same fixture at HD. Didn't want to have to mess with the flagstone to put the new one in, so a win for me.
Old one had burned up wires, probably from the heat of leaving it on all night with a big bulb in it. New bulb is LED and runs cool, puts out just as much light as the old 100 watter, but cost more than the fixture. Also rebuilt the side yard gate. The wife hated the termites-holding-hands look of the old one which we put in some 30-odd years ago. At first I just replaced the gate, but she wanted the adjoining boards done too. That involved the neigbhors gate/hinges etc and I really didn't want to go there. After some thought, and getting the impetus to change the back boards from the neighbor (not a fix it type guy) I took it all on. Was able to replace the back boards without having to re-hang the neighbors gate too. All in all it turned out OK, IMO. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569432909.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569432909.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569432909.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569432909.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569432909.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569432909.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569432909.JPG |
Exhaust fan in my kitchen. It has never worked and always suspected it might have been blowing instead of sucking. I was up cleaning the vent and decided to see how far I could take it apart.... about 5 min before my wife was to start cooking. I noticed that the flap was not opening when the fan was turned on. I took the motor to my work bench and plugged it and finally confirmed it was indeed blowing in the wrong direction! Probably been like this since a remodel was done in the 80s...
Fortunately the motors are easily sourced that spin in either direction and one is on the way from amazon. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1569433134.jpg |

'Popped' out some dings/dents on the beater. Painless dent tool from Amazon ($30) works remarkably well. |
Continuing work here at my place in an effort to downsize. Processing stuff in storage, re-organizing, disposing of things no longer of use.
I have a set of 7&8" factory Fuchs for the 951 and a pair of 9" replica Fuchs - all had tires on them. Took them to my local tire guy who removed the tires for me so I can easier sell the Fuchs. He refused payment and only wanted me to go check out some irrigation stuff at his house so the whole deal took 1/2 hour (so far) and now I'm one step further toward downsizing. I also have some Porsche engine stuff, including a 356 case complete with matching numbers, crank, & rods - never run. Is that a short block? |
Both Koni and Hawk are having some great rebates happening this month if anyone is looking for a weekend project.
Koni is offering up to 46% off MSRP. Hawk is offering up to $85 back. Koni Shocks Hawk Brake Pads |
I'm going to do some repairs on my boat trailer. It's an '86 Magic Tilt.
Here is the manufacturer's ID plate. Anyone know the best method of cleaning it up so I can read the information better? I can make out the information if I squint and use a magnifying glass, but I'd just like to clean it without messing it up. Other than just soap and water - any thoughts? Thanks! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570133340.JPG |
Worked in my garage both Saturday and Sunday doing some re-organizing.
Had a couple of tupperware type containers that were very shallow and large. Had them for a couple months or so and wasn't sure what I could use them for. It finally dawned on me....all the cutting/grinding discs and wheels for my angle grinder plus steel wool and sandpaper - all lightweight and in this type of storage container can be viewed easier. They also stored very well on some shelves I put up! Yah! ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570419082.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570419082.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570419082.JPG |
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570453281.JPG
My project: This is the finished product, I did not take a picture before, but this looks just the same only it stands upright now. This is a compost barrel. We throw in our grass clippings, and banana peels, a other organic waste in it to make soil. We can spin the barrel to mix things up, and let it rot. The frame is all made of solid plastic 2x4s. The uprights are bolted with 1/2 inch bolts to the base. One long threaded rod goes through the middle as an axle to rotate on. The uprights started to fail after several years of use. The plastic 2x4s were getting oval holes and one cracked. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570453668.JPG I made some super duper oversized "washers" or reinforcement plates to hold everything solid again. I tried to get 3 inch wide aluminum bars, but the only place that had them was a 25 mile each way trip. So I went with the 2 inch bars which I suspect is plenty big. I cut them 9 inches tall, (it was a 36 inch long bar) and drilled the two 1/2 inch holes to align with the current base. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570453934.JPG I then epoxied the bars in place to the plastic 2x4s and then used three self tapping screws per bar to hold them in place as well. I only have one vice to clamp one and clamps to clamp the other one. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570454087.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570454087.JPG The photo just above shows the 1/2 inch bolts in place only to align the plates with the plastic 2x4s to get clamped in place. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570454425.JPG This is just the base. One of the uprights had cracked, which allowed the upright to lean forward enough it was off center and the entire rig fell over with a full load of compost in the barrel. I had to empty it before I could repair it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570454672.JPG The plates are solid and should hold it steady for many years. As you can see, there are casters on the rig as well. The rig was designed to just stay in one place. My wife decided it should have wheels. She bought some wheels that were wimpy and broke in no time. So I added some pressure treated 2x4s to the base, and some steel plates to attach bigger and stronger wheels to. She could give rides on the thing around the block now, but it gets moved a few inches at most so far. |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570463678.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570463678.jpg So this is my DIY project....... a bit nervous but I'm muddling through....... not to much out there on replacing this gizmo but I've read and reviewed the material and videos on it. Got the connections out the way, labeled them, lined em up for re-connection, got to the LOWER bolt, removed pretty easily..... STOPPED. I figured I would stop while I was ahead with NO major disasters. NOW.... I have to get to the top screw. Thats the tough one. I need to make some kind of tool/screwdriver to get to it. Any ideas? Tight space, No visual, flathead screw. The good thing is that the lower screw is NOT tight just seated, I'm hoping the top one is the same so it will also come out easily. Going back in either today or tomorrow........ Thoughts? |

Re: My 2008 Estate by Whirlpool washer. Think I figured out why it's making that noise. Agitator dogs. Looks like one is broken. Have a kit coming on Tuesday.
Everything worked on the washer but it made a noise on the wash cycle. I also noticed my clothes got wound around the agitator. Finally decided to remove the agitator assembly and sure enough one of the dogs wasn't engaging. Very simple to work on - I was surprised. Hope this fixes it - will report back. |
My new KitchenAid dishwasher stopped washing.
Ran the test cycle and looks like the pump assembly needs changing. Of course this happens on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend and the part wholesalers are not open.... Damn thing is only a couple of years old. |
My buddy gave me a 4000 watt Coleman generator. We went to Rural King and bought a new battery and cables for it. 10 minute fix and it fired instantly. Also put some new wheels on it so it rolls nicely. Less than $50 all in. Topped off the tank, put it in the shed and now I hope I never need it.:D :D

Welded up this beat up brush hog. Didnt want to kill my little mig so fired up the 40s arc welder and played around with that. It should last a few more years. I ran out of paint

20-50% mix in a big glass container. Stir well and pour into cup through a paint filter. ~45psi air. Use up close a foot or two away, with ventilation. Adjust as necessary. This also works much better for wicker furniture. The thin mix coats all sides. Forget those expensive spray cans. |

Picked up a new pump assembly for the KitchenAid dishwasher.
Pump was only marginally cheaper than the whole assembly and will end up with a diverter valve and actuator and a wash pump motor that is still good. After getting the new assembly in place I disassembled the wash pump after removing it from the housing. Pump motor is fine and was still running when removed. The impeller's threaded hub was completely missing. Dishwasher is maybe two years old. WTF.... No signs of an impeller strike or foreign objects in the pump casing or impeller.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571191267.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571191267.JPG |
I have all that stuff to spray the paint but i never take the time to do it.
Today workin on my stihl ms251 chainsaw. It was like new i found it in the trash but they ran it with the brake on and melted the oil pump right out of it. I bought a cheap 8$ one from china and it didnt fit the shaft so i sanded it out and got it on. The gears are too far apart to drive each other!I cant believe these chinese parts dont work!So I ordered some from pennsylvania. I think they are still aftermarket but maybe not as bad. My free chainsaw is adding up  |

Our Stihl leaf blower would start and idle, but would only spool up to about half speed. I figured it was a clogged spark arrester in the muffler. I wasn't looking forward to taking it apart, but a quick look revealed that the spark arrester can be removed without taking the muffler off. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571406039.jpg The spark arrester unscrews right out of the muffler. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571406039.jpg The screen was almost totally blocked. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571406039.jpg Burning the carbon out with a MAPP gas torch. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1571406039.jpg Spark arrester is clean and the leaf blower runs like new. |
