It is the flip side of the same jingoistic we is special and rich theme. Where is global wage competition as a crimp on what Americans should be earning to compete against that Chinee or MexIcan worker. Or the trade deficit of you spending more than you make on cheap foreign made gee gaws. Then you have the social safety net programs that allows you to spend and not save for a rainy day in your old age. For Americans boiled beef on Sunday ain't gud nuff no more dey wants porter house and t bone steak everyday. An nary a politician is going to say no put on a sweater. |
America had a choice as to the road it would take in the 1968 through 1988 period. It could have taken the advice of Jimmy Carter (not that his policies were gud) and put a sweater on and tightened their belts as in the olden days. Or we could cut a swath of narcisstic high living on the credit card at the expense of future generations well being. You know which choice was made.
Now that the American consumer has hit the wall and is tapped out you shouldn't be surprised that the economy is moribund. You are paying for the excesses of the past 50 years. You shouldn't be delusional in thinking that you can return to those glory days of high living. No policies of the right or left is going to bring them back. Instead a sober assessment in the cold light of day would hold you in better stead. the mere fact that the FED had to do a rapid about face on their policy of raising interest rates and reducing their balance sheet should tell you that the economy can not do with out juicing in order to stay afloat. The picture is not a happy one and is rather grim. So do you want to turn into the wind and face it or continue on in denial and delusion? |
