Mattress topper recommendation?

Did a quick search and didn't see anything — coulda missed it.

Anyway, we have a Sleep Number bed 2nd from the most whiz bang model they sell (up-sell, actually). It's time to renew the memory foam part sandwiched in between the air bladders and the soft, breathable top. The factory installs a 2 inch typical blue memory foam and I think after the 10 years we've had the bed that advances have been made in foams.

Am I correct in believing this? So, I believe I can get a 3" foam layer inside the zippered enclosure. I have purchased this type of thing before at Costco but they have a lot more to offer online rather than in the aisle.

Any thoughts on what is the best option? A couple of notes: it doesn't need it's own cover as it goes into a covered assembly, and the breathable layer negates the common complaint about MF being hot to sleep on. So those are non factors.

Memory foam is cheaper and doesn't last as long as a good latex foam.

How about latex? We've got pillows and a mattress topper from this place, they make good stuff.

Latex is good. I just bought a latex topper for a 2nd SN bed we have in a spare room. I sleep there too. Latex is my choice as its characteristics are different than memory foam. It has spring back and support whereas the MF just gives in and sinks with body heat. She likes the sinking as she is about 110 lbs. Me at 165 drop like a rock but the outer cover of the big SN in the mas bed helps with that. Plus each side has adjustable air pressure.

One of the best mattresses I ever had I more or less constructed myself. I bought a full 5" latex mattress as a complete mattress with the padded encasement. It was to be used on a solid platform. After awhile I added 2" of the old original MF that I guess was created for NASA. Now that bed was absolutely the best I ever had but beds don't last forever. When I went to buy the 5" of latex again I was blown out the door with sticker shock. So I bought into the air mattress thing. I think the prices of latex materials have gone down with the popularity. I had mine in 1995.

A little bit of fun history: I was doing some work for this rich cat that had 5 houses in 5 different states back in '94. He had a business in NV doing some super secret development in the plastics industry and had General Motors as a client. I was commissioned to build a couple of nice platforms for some of the original foam material. For some reason I didn't and never will understand, he could only get these from Canada and I think they were of European origin.

But once I heard of the concept, I went looking to see what I could find on my own because he was paying $1000's for his imported stuff. I found my original latex at a small family owned mattress factory that got it when it came to building custom mattresses. They are since long gone as most folks who deal with bespoke products.

So I kinda know what I'm doing here but I wanted to hear of any experiences from you folks.

Super happy with our memory foam topper. ...but they dont breathe well so we pul the cover thing that normally goes over your mattress over that. Probably a name for that thing but I’m not feminine enough to know.

Exactly. I think I've been sleeping on latex foam pillows since I was a young kid. For a few years, I had a hard time finding latex and went through a few memory foam pillows and hated them.

We bought a 3" firm topper from the link above. The missus hated it (too firm). We called the place up, they sent a new box (no way I was getting the thing back into the original box once it had been unrolled) and paid for shipping for the return. I bought the soft 3" and the missus likes that one much better, but it's still not super soft/plush like a memory foam topper probably would be.
