Street legal Ford GT 1 mile, 300mph

Wow.

174 in the 1/4 mile
240 in the half mile
300 in the mile

2000 hp at the wheels, so probably 2500 at the crank. No dyno to really know for sure.

And it's street legal.

Amazing. Love the Gulf livery, too. But somehow a Ford GT with a parachute on the back just looks wrong.

Just..wow! Wonder if the aero of the latest GT body would give more?

Probably, just not much room in the engine bay. Would be interesting to see how my HP they can crank out of the 6cyl engine.

Ok, this brings up a question/problem I will never have....

Do parachutes have a "do not exceed" speed rating?

I'm guessing at 300 mph you'd need great tires, and there would be no musing.

So, good tires won’t cut it?

Road & Track posted this on Faceplant today.

In stock form, the 2005 Ford GT isn't a particularly aerodynamic car. Ford's engineers did their best to improve on the original GT40's disastrous drag-coefficient, but as performance development supervisor Kent Harrison told Car and Driver, their goal figure was "less than 0.39."
Which is surprising to me. They look pretty aero.

I guess with that much power they didnt have mess with the aerodynamics like the MKIV but then they arnt going around any corners either. Still I doubt ford expected the car would be going 300 when they designed it. Makes you wonder if the car is about to take flight

I'm an old dog. I read this and thought "It IS the new body style". I guess I never think of the very latest one when I hear someone say Ford GT.

Looked like the parachute off an F18 or something!

A blowover at 300. Not sure I would have the right stuff to attempt a record in that car if I ever thought of something like that before hand....

I'm thinking I'm going to set myself a rule.

At after about 150 mph, it can't get off the ground
(and stay off the ground) with wings, I want nothing to do with it.

I can’t imagine 300 when we used to hit 150 on the back straight at VIR. Things happen fast. Twice the speed is crazy fast.

I'm no tire engineer but I believe the issue with speed is more about temperature than centrifugal forces so in 1 mile there's likely not enough heat for the tire to come apart.

The mind boggles at how fast that is, and to be achieved in only one mile. Incredible. A hard 2nd gear rip in the 997TT makes me a bit dizzy from the acceleration force, I wouldn't want to ride in that monster. I have found my limits.
