This is pretty screwed up (parents)

Just had dinner with the family and my little boy got talking to us about his exciting school day in the 5th grade. Teacher announced, lets just call her Maggie, is now Tommy. She wants to be transgender and dislike the facts her name and gender is Maggie, a girl. Parents had a chit chat with the school and asked the teacher to make the announcement. A 5th grader, a little kid? Wtf is wrong with these parents? We have a lot of two moms and two dads household up here but the school shoved that down the kids throats stating that they have to accept that. We, as a family don't care if you have three dads or moms (One of his very good friends come over to our house all the time is from a two dads household), and get along with them fine, but don't shove that down their throats. Its not their call.

I’m sure this will be an unpopular opinion here but....

Who says this isn’t totally the kids idea? And honestly let them live their life. If they are just asking to be called a different name and recognized differently, how does that in anyway affect your child’s education?

Now think about what that kid is going through. Being a kid is confusing enough, without wondering if you were born with the right bits. If they are struggling to figure that out, I think it’s our duty as the adults in the room to make sure that they feel as comfortable in their own skin, and in their school and home lives as we can.

Social engineering in our schools? You can bet on it!

That said, better send this to PARF.

There’s not enough info in the OP to form an informed opinion. It went from teacher announced what the kid wanted to something being crammed down the kid’s throats in about two sentences. I’m sure there is more to the story.

That being said, at 10 (5th grade) it seems like waiting and watching the kid’s development is more appropriate that jumping to changing gender assignment. I think some of the kids are questioning their gender because it’s been talked about and in the news, and maybe a bit of peer pressure. I don’t think most kids at the age of 10 are mentally and emotionally prepared to make such decisions.

C\that kid “chose” to be transgendered the way a cat chooses to be vegan.

It’s the ****ed up parents calling the shots.

It could well be the child's idea - and though it may be heartfelt, it may also be unwise; it's a parent's job to explain the downsides and prepare the child. And really, I'm skeptical of someone that has yet to hit puberty making the call for themselves. What are they basing it on? Children are easily influenced. It could simply be that someone they admire is trans. If Becky decides to go back to Bill in 9th grade, he's in for a tough time.

"But why should they be unhappy, hiding their true self?" Are the kids that come out happy? The suicide rate for schoolkids they identify as trans is three times that other teens and I doubt it's a lot better for the rest of their cohort. Maybe they'd have been happier not coming out until they and their peers had matured.

It's called informed consent for a reason. Nobody 10 years old has the cognitive ability to make such a decision. Age 10? C'mon, some definite adult opinion was inserted here...had to be.

I worked last summer with a young trans person who was born female but said he knew by age ten he was a boy in a girl's body. Mom was out of the picture and dad was a red neck whose take on the situation was : you can't be a guy because you're not into cars. His family was not supportive and did everything they could think of to "change his mind ".
He said it wasn't a choice.

Misunderstood your OP. Student in the 5th grade wants to be called Tommy. I'd tell my kid to call the other kid Maggie until the parents officially change Maggie's name to Tommy.

I don't understand it. There a lots of things I don't understand. Reality and my capacity to understand are not fully parallel. That can make me uncomfortable. Reality is not concerned by my discomfort.

This, entirely. Other factors may be involved, but kids are generally a walking mirror of their parents values.

What I understand the least about all this, is why, is my , and my young children's acceptance on this issue so important to society.

Or we could show some compassion for a young child trying to find their way, even if we don't have a complete understanding of the situation.

I have nothing but compassion for that young child. I really hope he/she finds happiness in life, and can be comfortable in their own skin .

I was born in 1957, at 10 years old all I knew about girls was they were pretty, smelled good, and wore dresses.

IMHO we are way too much in a hurry to have children declare their sexual orientation... let them get through puberty for heavens sake.
