Bio diesel
Taking kids camping this weekend, so I better fuel up before price really jumps. Tank was empty so I fill up while I clean the windshield. As I pull the nozzle out, only to discovered it was bio-diesel that was pumped in. The same station I have been buying fuel from for the past who know how many years has changed to bio fuel, over 150 bucks worth. Any of you use it? I hear it will get rid of all sort of stuff in the bottom of the tank and clog fuel filters. Its my 06 duramax.

Wife is sitting this one out due to lack of modern amenities. You just might have to because we will be in some remote places in the mts.

Maybe bring the full complement of fuel filters along too.

Just curious what are your concerns about running bio diesel ?

We used to run it all the time in our Jetta diesels. As I recall, there was a noticeable performance improvement but slightly less fuel mileage.

It was probably a blend like B20.. 100% Biodiesel is not the norm
I've run biodiesel in my F250 PSD for year with no issues, additionally there is a place near my place in Vt that sells B100... when I fuel my truck with that, no diesel smell or smoke

I have a processor for making waste veg. oil into biodiesel. Have been running B100 for years in all my Mercedes diesels as well as my Kubota tractor. Neighbors like it when I would cut the grass as the exhaust smells like a BBQ.

Several stations now have “renewable diesel” labels on their pumps and I assume that means bio blend. I can still buy pure petro diesel at Chevron, including the cheapest station in town on LaCienega and Cadillac, just off of the 10 freeway. |

A few friends in Iowa found out the hard way that B20 is not really cold weather friendly. It crystallized in their fuel filter on a what would be a typical winters day. Perhaps with a additive package that is less of a issue now. We still run winter blend where it actually gets cold. (No1 and No2 mixed)

I am just not sure what bio diesel is. It sounds like it is fine and I don't have to worry about it but run it. Dang it, I jsut replaced my FASS filters. I have extra fuel filters just not water separator. Do you really think water separator is needed?

It'll clog up filters as biodiesel is more solvent like and will clean out the tank sending trash to the filters.
Run another tank of normal diesel or so and then swap out the filters.

F/W seperator filters usually is the first filter and usually higher micron...
Being an older truck and never running bio.... like the only thing it'll do is clog the filters with junk. So if you're not having fueling issues... at the same time hpfp's dont like to be starved... also biodiesel isn't good on hpfp's ie common rails due to the less lubrication. What is biodiesel? Soybean oil that is reacted with a primary alcohol under basic conditions to get the long chain hydrocarbon with a methyl ester.... it's cool chemistry and quite easy to make. The lack of the lubrication properties is why they blend it with regular diesel and is primarily more beneficial to use on older mechanical pump diesels. Also if your diesel is gelling on you. Cut it with kerosene.

Some of you guys are really confusing pure biodiesel with a small blend of bio into petro diesel. The stuff they sell at the pump in CA requires no special procedure on the vehicle after using it...there is functionally no difference to it.

The Sulphur or therefore lack of in the biodiesel says otherwise.
