The sad thing is that there are so few affordable sporty cars now.

The sad thing is that there are so few affordable sporty cars now. I don't mean powerful cars, I mean simple coupes with good weight balance and a powerful enough motor, and few luxury gadgets. There's the BRZ, some variant of the Mustang, maybe a 6-cyl Camaro, and what else? Miata RF? Even the STI is pushing $40K now, and it's arguable whether that's a true sports car or not. I swear I'm going to buy a Alfa 4C someday. Everything that auto journalists got wrong about the BRZ applies to that car, times 10.
A friend emailed this today. What say you ?

Why is it always about money?

Any of those cars can be had for $20K used... heck $20K will get high miles 996.

What you're missing is that a standard econobox will out perform the mustang of a few decades past.

I've NEVER purchased a new vehicle. I think the newest vehicle I've ever owned was my 2008 Boxster that had 21k miles when I bought it. I bought it in 2014, so it was already 6 years old. I think prior to that, the ages were probably more like 8-10 years old, but still vehicles with 30-50k miles.

I can't think of a time when car enthusiasts didn't have that lament. $3500 for a VW/Porsche 914 - a flippin' VW? TEN GRAND for a 911?
Sporty cars are always going to be expensive. FUN cars don't have to be. There is a guy with an old square bodied VW Golf that has a great time throwing it around the track at our DE events. He's probably a better driver that a lot of the 997 drivers. Sporty/cool costs money. Fun - well yeah it still costs money, but not as much by a long shot.

I've had tons of fun in plenty of cheap low performing vehicles.

The STI is very much a true sports car, I don't think that's ever been questioned.

I guess he was lamenting the cost of new cars.
That is a moot point to me, as I always buy used.

Wow, that Boxster S is massively overpriced.

My son recently bought low mile 2016 Golf R with MT after his promotion to captain and return from his second middle east deployment, well under $30k. I drove it recently and that thing is all kinds of cool. We looked at STI, Focus R and Kia Stinger. If I didn't need an AWD with more ground clearance, I'd own one. Much nicer interior than a Subaru and more stealthy as well. I'm a Subaru fan and daily a turbo XT outback MT.

As an aside, he towed it to his new posting at Ft. Bragg from Ft. Hood in Texas with his 79 Blazer which he's been fixing up. Just re did the interior with new seat covers and carpet kit. For those worried nobody under 50 likes cars :-)

The quote cited by the OP...so perfectly evokes the idea of a well sorted 944. Just saying!

At <$26k?

It's an S with 29k miles. That seems like a pretty good deal for a basically new condition car to me.

This Boxster S has been driven and cared for by an enthusiast in our local Porsche community. This PCA member has garage kept and meticulously maintained this Boxster S to very high standards. The Interior and Exterior both cosmetically and mechanically look and operate as new. There's a link to the CARFAX Report on our website and we can provide the last couple of years service records.
This beautiful (and hard to find) Midnight Blue Metallic car is in excellent condition. No curb rash on the rims and the Michelin tires are still deep in rubber. The top has no signs of wear, tears or fade and maneuvers quickly to take advantage of favorable weather. The seats show no signs of bolster wear. The clutch and brakes feel firm and confident as you'd expect in a Porsche. The front end has a Clear Bra to prevent future rock chips and road debris while enjoying the drive.
This Boxster S was very well optioned with factory equipment including:
*Preferred Package Plus
*Heated Front Seats
*19" Carrera Classic Wheel
*Sport Steering Wheel
*Porsche Windstop (Deflector)
*Bose Surround Sound System
*Remote CD Changer (6 Disc)
*Black Standard Leather
*Midnight Blue Metallic
*Floor Mats Interior Color
*Self-Dim Mirrors & Rain Sensor
*Power Seat Package
*Bi-Xenon Headlamp Package
*Black Top
*Sport Shifter
*Chrome Exhaust Pipe and dual exhaust tips

Considering the mileage (29K), I would like to see one for less money in the same condition and configuration
