Art Deco? Craftsman?

So, I'm listing a burl wood sculpture on eBay and I'm trying to describe the style of the piece. To me, it has elements of the Art Deco and/or Craftsman eras, even though the piece was made in the 1990's. I can tell you all about painting styles but I'm less knowledgeable about pieces like this. I'd like to describe it accurately, so...

Any thoughts as to the design elements? The piece in question:

Just to show how little I know, I would call it Mid East Abstract. but I don't recommend that.

I think you're right, it's a bit art-deco, but I'd push it closer to craft-style. Particularly, since you left so much of it in natural state. Gustav Stickley would be proud!

I would go Deco...it could be a hybrid...but Deco followed Craftsman as a style.

Deco was a more gaudy rendition of the Craftsman.

and there you have it, the definitive answer from Mr Know It All.

Label it 'mid-century modern' and put another zero at the end. Seems a popular technique nowadays.

Looks very Art Deco to me. Those horizontal lines look very Deco to me.

Well, there are three of them that run laterally across the removable piece in the center...

Interesting comment. The circle and the horizontal lines going through it are the first things I see.

It measures about 14 inches tall, 13 inches wide and about 2 inches thick. I don't recall the artist's name. I bought it in 1999 in a shop in Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco that is no longer in existence. I bought several things from them in that era, they had lots of unique one-of-a-kind art objects. It has sat on my computer desk for 20 years, hiding a key to my inner sanctum in it's little hidden compartment. I'm moving soon, so it's up for sale.

It's a pretty cool piece. The guy that made it was supremely talented.

If you did not know, that wood structure itself is called a "burl." Highly sought after by woodturners and other wood artisans. It's sort of like a wart on a tree.

Yep, I know what a burl is. I have a background in finish carpentry, with a side of furniture making, although it’s seldom been more than a hobby for me.

That said, I am acutely aware of the cost of wood. My family was fortunate enough to obtain quite a bit of walnut and oak the old-fashioned way, buying taking entire trees to sawmills. If you buy very much of it at retail prices they cost becomes somewhat obnoxious. Highly figured wood can be REALLY ridiculously priced. A piece of burl this large would not have been cheap, which makes me think that the artist must have enjoyed working for free.

Art Nouveau was the more curvy version. This is not what's happening with the sculpture here. Arts and Crafts maybe but it has a lot of elements of the architecture influenced by Art Deco.

Call it 'period' art. Let the buyer believe what he wishes.

I’m leaning less towards arts and crafts and more towards art deco. The intersection of the horizontal lines and the circle definitely feels like art deco. Likewise, the vertical triangular flutes on the curved surfaces feels like an art deco architectural element.

Obviously, the new owner can call it whatever he wants.
