Rubik's cube- revisited.

Here's the deelio... 38'ish years ago the rubik's cube was invented. I couldn't figure the damn thing out. I got the book titled "Solution to the rubik's cube." It was a travesty- no help at all. In frustration (I was 10)- I got the "simple solution to the rubik's cube." This book (for morons like me) was the answer to my prayers. Suddenly, I was not only solving the cube, I was in competitions at Chesterfield Teenage Center( A local mall) where I competed in heats to determine the best cube solver. I never got far (there were 12-15 year old kids I was competing against), but the book stayed in my mind as something that made a difference. Fast forward 30+ years. My daughter has a Rubik's cube. Only problem is I forgot how to solve it- so I went to where every intelligent parent would go- YOUTUBE. Problem there- ALL the videos are wrong!!!!!!!! Seriously- some solutions get close, but for all the 3d stuff, they still don't get 100%

So on ebay today, in CANADA, for about $6 bucks, I bought a coffee stained (and who knows whatever else stained) copy of the original book. That cube is MINE!!!!! :D

Yeah, pretty sure that's the one that we had. I could get really close with out it, something like 4 sides and just one or two blocks wrong, but could never fully solve it without the book. the pyramid was easy without the book as well as a few of the other similar puzzles.

Im great at puzzles but never could solve the cube. I have a pyramid one that i cant do either but I do have a round one that i can solve after a while. I dont know any fancy algorythems though. Theres a kid on utube ricer miata he is such an idiot but to my amazement he can solve the cube in like 20 seconds. I was blown away.

Ah man! I totally forgot about the pyramid! Wow!

I think I had the same book in Jr. High- over 30 yrs ago; up until about 5 years ago, I still retained the information, but found my old cube last year and couldn’t solve it.

Had the same book . Never did solve it the conventional way, but about 3 days into ownership, I figured out how to pop it apart, and re assemble . Done, more than one way to skin a cat .

A friend taught me a simple solution(35+ years ago). Solve one side, then it was 3 repetitive moves. Unfortunately that one was lost. I also used to take them apart to solve, turn one side 45 degrees, then pop it up to take it apart.

Had a student on our HS robotics team that was amazingly fast, used to compete.

Nice job fred! As any self respecting gear-head should do.

Me? My older brother owned that damn thing. I quit. His deal. Not mine.

Today, the kids stack cups...

Another one that would disassemble and rebuild the cube. SmileWavy

And another who did the same thing. Never could figure that thing out!

red-beard 04-07-2019 08:08 PM

I still have the cube and the book

My cube is at the bottom of the Passaic River, or more likely dissolved by the water in it.

My 10 year old son just recently set a new personal record for solving the Rubik's cube. His current record is one minute 15 seconds.

^I was never anywhere close to that fast!

Someone forwarded me this video- Kid solves three while juggling- on some "China's got talent" type show. This would be more impressive if he was riding a unicycle at the same time.

The editing to show suspense in the audience is pretty awesome!;)

Don't believe I've ever had my hands on a cube, but I remember in high school a guy on my football team said he solved it. That surprised me because frankly, the cube might have had a higher IQ that he did.

Turns out he had a cheapo version where he could peel the stickers off the cube and he carefully placed them all where he wanted.

Kudos for thinking outside the box.... I guess ;)

Funny I learned to solve recently using this website’s beginner method. 3-5 minute solves after about a week of practice. At least my kids are impressed. The more advanced methods result in much quicker times but require much more memorization and mental gymnastics.

I remember you would get the same color in three corners then it was a few specific moves to solve it.

I just moved the stickers on my friend's cube so it was unsolvable. I did pop mine apart a couple times to "solve" it.
