Pet food storage, what are you using?

The temperatures around here are starting to climb and that means ant season is just around the corner.

We buy 40 lbs bags of dry food, currently have three bags in the garage and the bags are not ant proof.

I bought one large plastic plastic bin with a O-ring screw top at the pet food store, works great but kinda pricey (only holds one bag).

Anyone know of a less expensive ant proof food storage for around 100 lbs of kibble?

We have had one made by Buddeez for a while and it works well. For Pets | Buddeez Dispensing Innovation

They are available at a lot of different places. Amazon, WalMart and Tractor Supply to name a few.

You need some ant countermeasures in addition to the more secure container. I make ant bait with borax that works well on invertebrates.

I keep mine indoors. Climate controlled. Never any ant problems.

Ants never get into it...as long as the cover is on tight.

I posted last year when we were having extreme ant infestation (probably due to the drought)

We tried:

Borax
dementous earth
Terro
Otho Home defense
Spectracide Ant Shield Insect Killer Granules

and none of that worked.

Ants are inside and outside. Pet food is stored in garage

Only thing that seems to stop them is to load my pump sprayer with malathion and lay down a ring of death around the perimeter of the house.

Many years ago when 'real' pesticides were available in CA I would use the same strategy. I sprayed so much that birds stopped flying over our yard Now it seems like nothing OTC works once they are inside your home/walls.

Why do you have so much kibble open at a given time? I would limit that during the warmer months if possible.

Check with your local fast food joint, such as a Wendy's Hamburgers, and see if they still get their pickles in a large plastic bucket with a plastic lid that has an O ring in the lid. Similar to the Home Depot "Project Buckets" but free for the taking on the right day from the fast food joint. A few washes and rinses with dish soap will get rid of the smell of the pickles.

We have multiple Home Depot 5 gallon buckets and buy the O-ring seal tops for them. Around here it's mice that are the problem.

It is best to store dog food in the bag it came in, unless you clean the storage container frequently.

I only buy one bag at a time, there’s no use in baiting the wildlife.

I store mine indoors, in the pantry.

+1 for galvanized trash cans. We used for dog and cat food, sweet feed and chicken feed. Kept fox, raccoons, coyotes, ground squirrels, badgers, etc at bay.

Wife likes the bargain of buying in bulk I still have a bottle of malathion in my garage.

Ants can absolutely get into the store bough bags.

We have been using the Home Depot buckets but they are a PITA and looking for something more user friendly, where do you get the O-ring lids?
