people running off the road

when I use to bike ride all the time I would notice there would be sections of road where it looked like nearly everyone would run off the road there.

so I was driving down the split 4 lane here in town and I noticed some very deep ruts on the edge of the road where people have been "drifting" off the side. but just in a section of maybe 100ft. straight road, no curves or turns. then the shoulder was back to grass.
these were deep ruts, not just bare grass, not very wide, maybe just over a tire width. these were so deep if I ran off there in my BMW I would bottom out.

so why is it people run off the road in certain areas?

when I rode bikes and saw this I would think is this were I am going to get killed because some idiot runs off the road right here.

Fog corner

A road section here on a 2 lane named Knox Butte Road. Leaving Albany, Or. Envision a gentle turn to the left as you go east. A crossroads at the beginning of this turn. No center road striping in the middle of the crossroads. Side (bike lane) striping curves toward the road on the right. Beyond the crossroads, a farm field...

Now envision a night of thick fog. Happens frequently. People follow the bike lane marking...yep right across the ditch and into the farmer's field.

Thus my nickname...fog corner.

I've seen one develop. Two lane straight road, between two small towns.

Caused by a new subdivision going up, dump trucks would have to wait to turn left, cars would just go around.

There is another one where the school busses pull over and let a bunch of cars go by since they are stopping every half mile to let kids on/off, they have a brief stop scheduled to pull over an let a mass of traffic move through. Cuts down on the angry driving, and idiotic a-holes trying to gun it and get past the traffic/bus/etc.

Road crown could explain it. I have found (after doing alignments) while road testing the car, I needed to find a very flat stretch of road to make sure there was no pulling. Flat road is scarce. I have also noticed that most cars tends to drift in the direction of those drop offs and lots of people don't save it.

The comments just make me shake my head. It is a part of Merica I just don’t come across. Maybe they should try listening to Rammstein.
