Math hard
Bought a couple of gallons of milk and 4 cinnamon rolls. Totaled up to $10.10 so I gave the kid a $20. He keys it up and then I say I have a dime. No dime but I did have a quarter. Kid locked up. I tell him $10.15. Still locked up. Kid called the manager to verify amount of change.

Nobody told me this would involve MATH dammit....I'm a cashier :)
I've learned just to pocket my windfall....but if it's over a quarter...I dunno...is that wrong? One time...got home....glanced at the receipt....she'd entered it wrong, but if it said that's his change...who am I to argue....I gots cents ;) |
Did he punch in the $20 first so the register would tell him your change would be $9.90? Or was this before he punched anything in?
I only say this because I always make sure the cashier gets the complete amount of payment ---- just to avoid this kind of confusion on their end. I know...I know.....but it is what it is...... |
He had already keyed it in.
|
And to think I had to take a timed money-math test when I applied to be a cashier at a chain of convenience stores... in 1988.

Maybe his register keyboard only had pictures on it & he couldn't relate to numbers.

.....everyone else....geekdom....nevermind.... |
I was recently very impressed by a Tim Hortons drive thru cashier. My total for coffee was $2.85.
When I drove up she had 15 cents ready in her hand plus a toonie ($2 coin), and a $5 and a $10 bill under a small paper weight She was ready to give change for $3, $5 bill, $10 bill or $20 bill before i even got to the window I happened to pay with a $10 bill so I got the hand full of change plus a fiver. Guess if I pulled out the MasterCard she would have just dumped the coins back in the til and handed me the POS machine. Didn’t take her more than a few seconds to figure out which change necessary to bring it up to next dollar level then the major denominations above that before anything punched in. She was of course a ‘mature’ employee of perhaps 50-60 years of age. I kick myself because I didn’t think fast enough to give her all the coins ($2.15) as a tip for being a smart clerk. |
^^^^ She prolly has a PHD in Maf ;)
|
Then there’s the ones that stand behind the til saying your total is $15.25.
You hand them a $20 bill then say ‘hold on a sec’ while you rummage in your pocket for a quarter... which you thrust at them after they have already punched in the $20. He hands the quarter back to you saying that’s too much and proceeds to hand you back your $4.75 in change. You 🙄 I honestly believe these millennials expect us all to conform to a cashless society. I honestly believe it may come someday. If you want to sell something privately you’ll need a PayPal acct or one of those cube readers. No more cash. Wait for it... |
You should have had him break the quarter, and given him back the dime with the 20.

It is sad though that cashiers that can quickly figure change are rare and admired. Used to be mandatory. |

Got some $.70 wings on Monday. Ordered 10 of them and the cashier tells me it'll be $12.xx. I'm a little puzzled and I repeated my order, 10 wings at $.70 each. Told her it should be $7.00 plus tax. The girl spoke to another girl who verified my math. Original girl said, "Sorry, I pushed the wrong button." lol

You made my evening 😂👍 Quickly now: what’s the change of both those packages from $10? 🤔 (And... can you change two tens for a five? Say it quickly with a straight face... maybe you’ll get a rube ) |
