trade it in....

In northern CA, KBB tends to be optimistic and more often than not what they show as trade-in numbers is more likely private party selling prices. So, if a real selling price is more like $60K, then the trade-in value is more like $55K.

If you look at what the asking prices are, like Denis did, and the lower numbers are around $65K (I didn't look), you can assume they're selling for something less than that, and that's the realistic private party value. When there's tons of them around, you're not likely to get away with getting much more than that.

The market can change pretty quickly on cars like this. I paid $80K MSRP for a ZO6 back in 2008 when it was hot. Not long after that they cooled off for $10K+ discounts. It's rarely a good idea to pay sticker or more for a car, but sometimes there are exceptions. The Ford GT comes to mind, as well as the BMW Z8. I'm sure some Porsches and Ferraris have been worth all the money when new and then went higher. The Toyota FJ Cruiser has done well.

There is no way on earth that Corvette is a book car w an entire page of 2016 Z-06s on ebay today. Probably $10k soft, at least.

I spoke with my uncle.

Told him I was honored he'd consider giving it to me, but with my daughter's tuition, there was no way I could outlay $55k at the right now. He happened to be fairly lucid at the time, and seemed fine with what I said. I told him I would be happy to help on selling it, although, his favorite vette dealer in Georgia would probably get it, have it picked up and shipped from NC. He also has several vette friends who can keep him straight.

I am happiest about the fact that I wouldn't be selling it behind his back. The tight margins would have necessitated a quick sale before it became a loss. I just wouldn't have felt good about that.

I am also happy about keeping personal/business deals separated in this situation. This is something that was a major issue when my father's health declined, and brought up a bunch of "not so great" memories, so I didn't want a repeat situation with my uncle. The message he left (something as simple as an oil change) this morning galvanized that decision really quick...

He said he would call his "Man" in Georgia. We'll see what he says...

Thanks again for the input, it really helped.

Good decision. I'm glad to hear your uncle is okay with it.
